CAAV asks Lao Cai to reconsider airport projectThe Saigon Times Daily HCMC – In response to a proposal by the Lao Cai provincial government for building the VND5.8-trillion Sapa Airport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has requested the locality to thoroughly study the necessity and efficiency of the project, reported the local media. According to CAAV deputy head Vo Huy Cuong, the local authorities should carefully weigh the impact of other means of transport, along with the province’s economic development orientation and tourism prior to preparing a plan for building the airport. Cuong stressed that building an airport is a legitimate aspiration for any locality; however, its feasibility must be mulled seriously, regardless of whether the project is backed by private or state funding. PM urges Lao Cai to develop border gate economy
(VOVworld) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc praised Lao Cai’s business and investment environment at a working session Wednesday with provincial authorities. Mr. Phuc said that, as one of five leading localities in the provincial competitiveness index, Lao Cai should continue to overcome current difficulties to develop high-tech agriculture. He noted: “Promoting border gate economic development is a way for Lao Cai to become a commodity entrepôt for countries in the Mekong sub-region, ASEAN, and China - a modern logistics center for the region, connecting seaports, airports, railways, and road transport. Lao Cai to get new facelift with French loan
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has agreed to a loan of 20 million euros from the French Development Agency (AFD) for an infrastructure project in Lao Cai province bordering China. The project covering urban and transport infrastructure is to upgrade inter-communal roads in Sa Pa and Bac Ha, Si Ma Cai and Bat Xat districts. SaPa, the French-style tourist resort, will get its inner roads improved. Water supply systems, water drainage networks, and public lighting will be targeted in the project. Additionally, a waste water treatment station and a rubbish treatment plant will be built in the locality, according to the project developer. Tourists flocked to Sapa to see snow-dropping
(CPV)- Sapa Town, Lao Cai Province saw increasing number of tourists as from the lunar new year. In particular, when ice was form in the Peak of Hoang Lien Son Range from February 12, the number of tourists suddenly surged. Sapa saw 60 percent increase in the number of tourists during Tet 2007 over last Tet, mainly those from Southern provinces and Hanoi, said Mr. Pham Tien Dung, Deputy Chairman of the Sapa trade and tourism office. Chinese tourists from Ha Khau and neighboring areas near Lao Cai traveled to Sapa to enjoy the unusual scene. Hotels and restaurants are full of tourist, with an increase of 40-50 percent in room capacity. The cost of touring car and taxi from Lao Cai to Sapa increased by 20-30 percent. The temperature in Sapa has dropped to below zero degrees Celsius. The peaks of the Ham Rong Mountain and O Quy Ho Pass were covered with ice. The whole Sa Pa town was shrouded in thick mist. Sun Group pledges VND20 trillion investment in Lao Cai Dao Loan By Dao Loan - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – Sun Group has committed to investing over VND20 trillion (US$887.5 million) to develop an airport and other projects in Lao Cai Province at a tourism investment promotion conference for the northwestern region in HCMC on November 23. Sun Group plans to build more than 8,000 hotel rooms in addition to an airport in the northern mountainous province. Besides Sun Group, other domestic enterprises including Saigontourist Holding Company said it would carry out major tourism projects in the region at the event jointly organized by the Steering Committee for the Northwestern Region, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the HCMC government.
