JAKARTA/HANOI -- Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) discussions on the early retirement of coal-fired power plants in Indonesia may have hit a snag as a local official said on Monday that western countries are not ready to finance such projects. JETP, a financing scheme made up of equity investments, grants and concessionary loans from members of Group of Seven (G7), multilateral banks and private lenders, is aimed at helping developing nations accelerate their shift towards cleaner energy sources in the power sector and cut reliance on dirty fuel such as coal. South Africa was the first country to reach a deal under the JETP, securing a $8.5 billion financing pledge in 2021. “In recent times, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) haven’t been contributing as much as they once did,” said Phan Van Mai, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, at last week’s national conference to address SOE production, business, and investment improvements. In Ho Chi Minh City alone, there are almost 50 SOEs. As of July, these enterprises boasted total assets of $4.43 billion with an equity capital of $3.16 billion. Their collective revenues for the first six months stood at $1.33 billion, with a profit of $205 million. Harnessing the vast resources of these SOEs is imperative for Ho Chi Minh City’s economic growth, Mai stressed, adding that the private sector, inclusive of both private domestic groups and foreign direct investment, have also been expected, and even tasked, to stimulate economic growth. Visitors can gain a deeper insight into Vietnam's rich and diverse ethnicity through the virtual photo exhibition. Two hundred photographs of women in traditional costumes from 54 Vietnamese ethnic groups, taken by renowned French photographer Réhahn, are being displayed for the first time on Google Arts' online digital museum - Google Arts & Culture. This portrait of a Red Dao woman was taken by Réhahn in Sapa, Vietnam's northern province of Lao Cai. South Korea’s SK Group continues to deepen investment in Vietnam
SKC Co. Ltd. (SKC), a subsidiary of the SK Group , has received an investment certificate to develop a high-tech biodegradable materials factory in the northern port city of Hai Phong. With the total investment capital of $500 million, the factory specialises in producing biodegradable materials such as polybutylene adipate terephthalate and polybutylene succinate. The project spreads across an area of 32,089 square metres in the Haiphong I DEEP C Industrial Zone in the Dinh Vu-Cat Hai Economic Zone. In the first phase, the project will start construction in mid-December 2023, slated to be completed within nine months. The project is expected to reach an output of 35,000 tonnes by year-end. In the second phase, the company will increase the total output to 70,000 tonnes per year. Hanoi schools join Young Health Program Vietnam
The second phase of Young Health Program Vietnam will be implemented over three years to improve Vietnamese youth's health and quality of life, primarily those between 10-24 years of age. The second phase of the Young Health Program Vietnam (YHP) for the 2023-2025 period was officially launched on October 2, and along with communication campaigns, awareness-raising activities are scheduled to take place at schools in Hanoi. Most of the schools in the districts of Cau Giay, Long Bien, Dong Anh, and Hai Ba Trung will join the YHP, which has been held by Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), AstraZeneca, and Plan International Vietnam.
