Vietnamese Ambassador Le Linh Lan in Switzerland speaks at the launching event. — VNA/VNS Photo The Vietnamese Embassy in Switzerland recently held a ceremony to launch the non-profit Switzerland-Vietnam business group (SVBG), which aims to promote exchanges and investment and trade co-operation between enterprises of the two nations. Based in Lausanne, the SVBG, the first of its kind founded by Vietnamese expatriates in Switzerland, will focus on offering trade information via workshops, forums, and internal bulletins; providing legal consultations and guidance; developing links for technological transfers and improvement; and introducing quality human resources. It will also make recommendations for a more favourable business climate to agencies of both nations while organising socio-cultural activities serving its goals. Speaking at the debut ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador Le Linh Lan said the group came into being at a special time as Viet Nam has placed the COVID-19 pandemic under control and prepared the best conditions possible to welcome Swiss investors. Lan said the would embassy support the operation of the SVBG. According to the diplomat, Switzerland is the sixth-largest European investor in Viet Nam, with its investment totalling US$2 billion, mostly in manufacturing – processing and electricity. Currently, close to 100 Swiss firms are operating in Viet Nam. Meanwhile, Viet Nam is the fourth-biggest trade partner of Switzerland in ASEAN, with bilateral trade exceeding $3.6 billion in 2019. Since 2012, Viet Nam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – the intergovernmental organisation of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland – began negotiations for a trade deal which is expected to be signed this year. — VNS …

Việt Nam joins ASEAN discussion on community, Myanmar

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Phạm Bình Minh speaks at the Informal Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers held online yesterday. — VNA/VNS Photo HÀ NỘI — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Phạm Bình Minh has urged all ASEAN members to find a peaceful way to resolve the ongoing violence and political crisis in Myanmar. Speaking at the Informal Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers held online yesterday, the Deputy PM said: “The increasing violence and tension causing the loss of people's lives in recent days in Myanmar has affected the peace and stability not only of Myanmar but that of the whole region.” He called on all ASEAN member nations to “refrain from causing any types of violence, ensure safety for the people, and facilitate peaceful dialogues that will help the situation to return to normal.” He also asked the member nations to closely coordinate, promote the bloc’s role and effectively use existing cooperation tools and mechanisms – including coordination with global organisations such as the United Nations – to help Myanmar stabilise the situation for the benefit of the Burmese people and the country, as well as for peace and stability of the region, and solidarity and credibility of ASEAN. The discussions come as protesters, many wearing hard hats, began marching in the biggest city Yangon for what they said would be another big demonstration. Several shopping malls have closed because of the unrest. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of protesters in Yangon on Monday and later combed side streets, firing rubber bullets, witnesses said. At least 21 protesters have been killed since the turmoil began. The army said one policeman was killed. The coup on February 1 halted Myanmar's tentative steps towards democracy after nearly 50 years of military rule, and has drawn condemnation and sanctions from the United States and other Western countries, and growing …

He asked the two cities to speed up the building of e-government and the reform of administrative procedures as well as policies for public servants. The PM asked the administrative agencies at ward and district levels to improve efficiency and focus more on the people, while officials, Party members and public servants should enhance their responsibility towards the Party and people. For draft decrees, the Government leader asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to gather opinions, especially on the role of the Chair of the People’s Committee of wards and districts when there is no People’s Council as well as the authority and duties of the Chair of the People’s Committee as the highest leader of State administrations in wards and districts.
