Vietnam should expand visa policy to welcome growth

Pham Hong Long, dean of Tourism Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi Back in 1996, Malaysia launched a programme to attract retired people with a 10-year visa. Last year, the initiative was renamed My Second Home and now targets anyone 21 years old and above. Malaysia has also introduced a premium visa initiative to attract wealthy foreigners to invest and reside in the country for a period of 20 years. In addition, it currently grants visa exemption to 162 countries. Thanks to its open visa policy, the country received over 7 million tourist arrivals in 2022, double the figure of Vietnam. Vietnam will add more countries to its visa waiver program, offer a longer visa-free stay, and expand the list of countries eligible for e-visa application, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told a teleconference on tourism development in 2023 titled ‘Boosting Tourism Recovery and Promoting Growth’ on Wednesday this week. These moves are expected to boost Vietnam’s inbound tourism one year after the country fully reopened its doors to international tourists on March 15 last year. Vietnam’s Khanh Hoa to receive dozens of Chinese tour groups through end of month
Though China added Vietnam to its list of approved countries for group tours on March 15, flights carrying groups of Chinese tourists to Khanh Hoa Province in the south-central region will not resume until March 26, according to Cam Ranh International Terminal Joint Stock Company. Accordingly, low-cost air carrier Vietjet Air will run about 34 round-trip flights between China and Khanh Hoa from March 26 to March 31. While China Southern Airlines has plans to reopen an air route connecting China with Cam Ranh International Airport in Khanh Hoa on March 26 with one daily flight, the frequency will float between 25 and 30 daily international flights from mid-April 2023 onward. Thailand aims to attract more high-spending Muslim tourists
Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Department of Tourism (DoT) is designing plans to promote itself as a friendly destination for Muslim tourists, local media reported. The department and the private sector in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Phuket have held discussions on Islamic tourism to seek measures to attract more high-end visitors from the Middle East. According to Director of the DoT’s Tourist Attractions Development Division Athuek Phrasenmoon, Muslim tourists are now a main target group for the global tourism industry due to this being the fastest-growing market with high spending power. Athuek said Thailand saw 11.8 million international arrivals last year, more than 400,000 of whom came from the Middle East , up 65% compared to the same period in 2019. 1 dead, 9 hospitalized after eating pickled carp in central Vietnam
Ten people in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam were hospitalized for Botulinum poisoning, with one of them dead after eating pickled carp. Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday night told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the Quang Nam Northern Mountainous Region General Hospital, where the patients are in treatment, had called for the former’s support on the morning of the same day. Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital, through an online consultation, diagnosed the patients with Botulinum poisoning. Due to the urgent situation, Cho Ray Hospital decided to send three experts and an antitoxin to Quang Nam to treat the patients. Vietnamese athletes secured 23 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze medals from tournaments for both seniors and juniors during the seven days of competition in Manila. Prominent among the winners is Asian champion Hoang Thi My Tam who secured a double title after beating Chokprasertgul Sirigamolnate of Thailand in the women's U21 55kg class and Montalvo Jenelle of the Philippines in the senior pool.
