Japan power plant shutdown raises fear of shortage in sweltering heat
TOKYO -- Japan's electricity grid creaked on Thursday under the strain of Tokyo's hottest June since records began, with the unexpected shutdown of a power plant raising fears that tens of millions of people could be deprived of power on another scorching day. Temperatures of around 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) were expected in some parts of greater Tokyo, home to 37 million people, on the sixth day of a heatwave that began after the earliest end to the capital's rainy season in decades. Maximum highs are not forecast to drop to 30C (86F) before Tuesday. With power producers scrambling to bring nearly 50-year-old turbines out of mothballs, the closure of a 600-megawatt (MW) plant in northern Japan that sends supplies to Tokyo came with reserve power capacity hovering around 3% - the level below which blackouts can occur. Operator Joban Kyodo Thermal Power Company cited unexplained technical issues for the closure but said that parts of the plant had been restarted as of 1 p.m., … [Read more...] about Japan power plant shutdown raises fear of shortage in sweltering heat

Vietnam midfielder can do well in France: French-Algerian defender
Zarour said that on the basis of football skills, Quang Hai has what it takes to play for Pau FC. "It's obvious because Hai is good at football," he said. Hai is no stranger to Zarour. The two played against each other in V. League games from 2016 to 2019. Then, Zarour was playing for Khanh Hoa while Hai was still with Hanoi FC. Zarour started his career at Cannes in France's third division and moved to Dijon in Ligue 2 for the 2009-2010 season. Zarour was the mainstay of Dijon's promotion to Ligue 1 in the 2011-2012 season. Later, he moved to the lower divisions. After playing for Khanh Hoa, the 39-year-old midfielder returned to France to play in the semi-professional leagues. Zarour understands Quang Hai's challenges when playing in a new environment, with a different language, culture and football philosophy. Rising stock account numbers despite plunging trade causes worry
"I opened the other three accounts because registration is easy and more brokerages mean I get to receive more regular investment advice," the 30-year-old office worker explained. In the last two years brokerages have hugely simplified the account opening process, he said. When he opened his first account in 2020, he had to visit the brokerage, but this year he opened a new account online. People like Dung are partially the reason why the number of new stock accounts has been skyrocketing despite a decline in trading. Over 476,000 new accounts were registered in May, the highest ever monthly figure in the stock market’s two-decade history, according to the Vietnam Securities Depository. Around 1.4 million new accounts were opened in the first five months of this year, higher than the total number added between 2017 and 2020. There are now 5.65 million stock accounts, or one each for 5.7 percent of the population. But the average daily trading in May fell by 32 percent … [Read more...] about Rising stock account numbers despite plunging trade causes worry
