Mekong flowing at highest in years but drought feared later
According to Mekong River Commission (MRC), from November 2021 to April 2022 the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB) was wetter than normal years with rainfall 25 percent above average basin-wide. At Thailand's Chiang Saen, the second uppermost monitoring station in the LMB, the level rose from 1.84 meters on Mar. 2 to 3.25 meters on May 11. The latter figure is lower than the 60-year average until 2021, but notably higher than during the drought years of 2019–21. At the Vientiane station in the Laotian capital, water levels even exceeded the 60-year average. In Cambodia, levels along the stretch from the Stung Treng to Kompong Cham monitoring stations rose by 0.66-2.22 meters, an increase of around 1.5 meters from last year, the MRC said in a statement. The Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) said late last month that the Mekong Delta, where the river reaches the sea, in April received 15-20 percent more water than average. In May and June the … [Read more...] about Mekong flowing at highest in years but drought feared later
Shanghai aims to defeat Covid over next week as Beijing hunkers down
Easing weeks of punishing restrictions in the commercial hub would bring relief to China's battered economy, although there is growing concern that Beijing may yet take a similar course of action if it fails to get a nascent outbreak under control. Shanghai's deputy mayor, Wu Qing, said the city of 25 million aims to eliminate Covid outside of quarantined zones within the next week or so. After that, the city's lockdown will be "lifted in batches", with shops opened and traffic restictions eased, he said in the announcement which confirmed a Reuters story from Sunday. The vast majority of Shanghai's more than 2,000 new cases are in areas already under the tightest controls, while those found in the relatively freer communities are the ones most closely watched for clues as to where Shanghai's outbreak is heading. The number of such cases rose to four on May 12, up from two the previous day. Last week, some of Shanghai's residents were allowed outside their housing compounds … [Read more...] about Shanghai aims to defeat Covid over next week as Beijing hunkers down
US-ASEAN summit marks ‘new era’ for ties: Biden
Addressing the second day of a two-day meeting, Biden said "a great deal of history of our world in the next 50 years is going to be written in the ASEAN countries, and our relationship with you is the future, in the coming years and decades." The summit marks the first time that ASEAN leaders gathered as a group in Washington and their first meeting hosted by a U.S. president since 2016. The Biden administration hopes the effort will show that Washington remains focused on the Indo-Pacific and the long-term challenge of China, which it views as its main competitor, despite the crisis in Ukraine. "We're launching a new era - a new era - in U.S.-ASEAN relations," Biden said. Earlier, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told ASEAN leaders the United States would remain in the region for generations and stressed the need to maintain freedom of the seas, which Washington says is challenged by China. "The United States and ASEAN have shared a vision for this region, and together we … [Read more...] about US-ASEAN summit marks ‘new era’ for ties: Biden

Big customers to buy electricity directly from generators
The direct power purchase agreement is expected to promote renewable energy development in Viet Nam. — Photo vnbussiness.vn Big customers could buy electricity directly from the generators in a pilot programme to develop a mechanism for a direct power purchase agreement (DPPA). This was a highlight in a recent draft Prime Minister’s decision about the direct power purchase mechanism between renewable energy generators and big customers, which was raised for public comment. Under the draft, the total capacity of power plants to join in the pilot programme would be less than 1,000MW. The e-portal for registration would be opened for 30 working days to receive application files. After that, the Ministry of Industry and Trade would announce the pilot mechanism within 15 working days and the list of generators and customers to join the pilot programme within 30 working days.
