Van Phuong, who lives in District 7, said he signed a contract with AISVN's chairwoman Nguyen Thi Ut Em in 2018 to lend the school VND5 billion (US$205,000). With such loans from their parents, the children would be allowed to study for free at the school in Nha Be District until they graduate from high school or move to another school. As stated in the contract, the loan is interest-free, and the school will pay it within 90 days after the students move to another school or finish their 12th grade. "My children moved in 2022 but the school has paid us nothing," Phuong said. He added that the school had promised to pay the debt twice, in January and May this year, but has defaulted until now. "When signing the contract, I simply thought that my two children could get access to an international education free of charge if I lent them the money, which is a long-term benefit. I did not expect the school to break its promise like this," he said. In the same situation, Thanh … [Read more...] about Parents accuse HCMC international school of dodging debts

The hosts enjoyed success in gymnastics, fencing, rowing, shooting, taekwondo and mountain biking to top the medals table in Hangzhou with 39 golds at the end of the second full day of action. South Korea and Japan are their closest competitors with a distant 10 and five golds respectively. Vietcombank sold the dollar at VND24,585, up 0.20% from Monday. The State Bank of Vietnam raised its reference rate by 0.03% to VND24,084. The dollar gained 0.20% to VND24,450 on the black market. It has increased by 3.60% against the dong since the beginning of the year. Globally the dollar stood by 10-month highs against a basket of major currencies on Tuesday, supported by U.S. bond yields scaling 16-year peaks, while the yen tiptoed deeper into the intervention danger zone, Reuters reported. The U.S. dollar index touched its highest since November at 106.1. The yen has slowly but inexorably slid toward the 150-per-dollar mark as policymakers stuck with ultra-easy settings. The psychological level is seen as a likely red line for the finance ministry, whose warnings of possible intervention have stepped up in recent weeks. Traders have an eye on a Tuesday meeting of political leaders and Bank of Japan officials. The yen hit 148.97 to the dollar on Monday and … [Read more...] about Dollar reaches new height in 2023
HCMC regulating financial operations at private schools
The city's Department of Education and Training said in a Monday statement that private schools, including international schools, must separate their education and training activities from their businesses, including capital mobilization and financial investment. The order was made following a case in which parents showed up at the American International School Vietnam (AISVN) in Nha Be District last Thursday demanding the school pay its debts. The parents said they had signed contracts with the school's chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Ut Em, to let the school borrow money so that their children could study for free. The school said in a press release later that the loans were actually investments in the school and the sum would be returned within 5 to 15 years from the time the children matriculated at the school. Speaking to VnExpress on Sunday, a representative from the department said it would send an inspection team to the school on Wednesday to look into its financial situation. … [Read more...] about HCMC regulating financial operations at private schools

EVN proposes accelerated electricity imports from Laos
EVN has urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) to expedite electricity imports from Laos in a bid to amplify the power supply in the North by 2025, as reported by local newswire VNExpress on September 25. The strategic import of electricity from Laos is emerging as a linchpin in the mitigation of potential electricity shortfalls over the coming dry seasons. The approach is underscored by both meticulous operational foresight and a diplomatic synergy, entrenched in the 2019 cooperation agreement between Vietnam and Laos. According to the National Power Development Plan VIII, and thanks to the cooperation agreement, Vietnam plans to purchase 3,000MW of electricity from Laos by 2025, with potential increments to 5,000MW by 2030 and 8,000MW thereafter if conditions permit.
