Vietnam dreams of becoming world’s next factory. But at what cost?
A reporter from Singapore recently asked me that question. This wasn't the first time that I heard Vietnam's name being uttered in conversations about this so-called "world factory." There is information saying Apple has plans to, for the first time ever, move certain MacBook manufacturing activities to Vietnam in 2023, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently suggested Samsung produce chips in Vietnam starting this year. The year 2022 was the year of de-globalization, where nations tried to reduce their interdependence regarding manufacturing and production. One of the main drivers of this shift was the United States, which wanted its businesses, as well as those of its allies, to depend less on China when it comes to manufacturing. During the time of China's strict Covid-19 policies, many countries moved their production out of China. Vietnam then emerged as potentially the next best thing according to several leading economic media, such as The Economist, Nikkei Asia and … [Read more...] about Vietnam dreams of becoming world’s next factory. Vietnam likely to become next Asian industrial hotspot
Indian news outlet stattimes.com recently published an article saying Vietnam is likely to become a burgeoning industrial hub, especially for tech and apparel, as well as its beautiful beaches and delicious cuisine. The newswire pointed out that while parts of Asia are still in the process of recovering from the global pandemic, the Vietnamese economy has boomed, reaching an impressive 8% growth last year, faster than other major regional economies in Asia, including India, Japan, and China. In addition, export revenue hit US$372 billion, an annual rise of 10%. The Indian news outlet attributed the boom for Vietnamese industry to the disruption to supply chains occurring on the Chinese Mainland, Asia’s largest manufacturing hub, particularly as factories were subject to shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, companies turned to alternative locations as a means of continuing and diversifying their production streams. According to the publication, the country boasts a … [Read more...] about Vietnam likely to become next Asian industrial hotspot

Thirteen crew members were rescued on Wednesday from a cargo ship that sank off southwestern Japan during fierce winter winds, with planes and ships, including private vessels, searching for the remaining nine. The vessel, the 6,651-tonne Hong Kong-registered "Jintian", issued a distress call late on Tuesday, the Japan Coast Guard said. Media reported a person on the ship said it was listing and taking on water, and later reports said the 22 crew members - all Chinese or Myanmar nationals - had transferred to lifeboats. There was no immediate word on what caused the vessel, which was carrying lumber, to capsize. A Coast Guard spokesperson said winds were strong at the time the distress signal was received at around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Coast Guard immediately sought assistance from patrol ships and aircraft in the vicinity, the west of Nagasaki city, top government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno said. The ship sank at 2:46 a.m. (17:46 GMT on Tuesday), he added, quoting … [Read more...] about Thirteen crew rescued after ship sinks off Japan, search on for 9 missing
