Visitors to the January 14 event, including Vietnamese and French, were impressed with a show of the “ao dai” (a traditional costume of Vietnam), performances of the country’s martial art Vovinam, and traditional dishes, among others. The tray symbolizes the wholeheartedness and gratitude of the present generation towards their ancestors and the Genie of the Land during Tet. Like other popular rituals, the preparation of a five fruit tray for Tet has become an established convention. During the few days just before Tet, the Vietnamese begin to buy the necessary fruits for this purpose. A five fruit tray is usually composed of a hand of green bananas, a ripe pomelo (or a Buddha's hand, a shaddock), oranges, persimmons, sapodilla plums, a bunch of kumquat, and in recent years, one can add mangoes and grapes from southern Vietnam, or apples and pears from China. Although it is called a five fruit tray, it does not necessarily contain exactly five kinds of fruit. Arranging fruits on the crimson, hourglass shaped wooden tray is really an art. Cu Chi Tunnels popular tourist attraction in HCM City
Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of underground defense tunnels built by locals and resistance forces from 1946 to 1968 in the district of the same name, have become a popular tourist attraction in Ho Chi Minh City. Constructed with rudimentary tools, the network was originally simply structured short paths used to hide resistance forces, documents and weapons, and support communication, each of which was built separately by a village in these communes. To meet the need for communication between villages, these paths were later linked, forming a complex interconnected network. By 1965, some 200 km of tunnels and 500 km of surrounding combat trenches were dug, which were turned into a system of crisscrossing tunnels with three floors. The top floor is about 3m deep; the middle floor, 6m deep; and the bottom floor, 8-12m deep with numerous trenches. Bonsai rental services have become more popular this Tet Lunar New Year in HCM City. An apricot tree for sale Duong Minh Dung, owner of an apricot garden in Cu Chi District said that he has over 100 apricot trees, including several old ones valued at hundreds of million dong. "Our customers can buy or rent the trees for Tet decorations," Dung said. "We're having more rental bookings this year as customers said that they couldn't afford to buy the trees. They will only have to pay VND10 million for a tree which costs VND100 million." The farmer said that he prefers to rent the trees as he wants to keep those beautiful trees that he has spent lots of time and effort taking care of. On Mai Chi Tho Street in Thu Duc District some gardeners are also busy trimming the bonsai trees before renting them out to customers during Tet.
