The UNDP has given 400,000 USD to the building of pilot Internet-connected information centres in rural areas to give farmers access to information needed to improve farming skills and raise their incomes. The 500,000 USD project on the construction of these centres will benefit the four northern provinces of Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa and Thai Binh, the central provinces of Lam Dong and Dak Lak, and the southern provinces of Binh Thuan, Binh Phuoc, Tien Giang and Vinh Long. Internet services to bloom in rural areas By Thoa Nguyen - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – A project to help rural people approach computers and internet services is set to be kicked-off on Friday in 40 poverty-stricken provinces across the country under the sponsorship of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. As planned, the five-year scheme will be deployed from 2011 to 2016 at 400 province- and district-level public libraries and 1,500 commune-level post offices and libraries. The project will install 12,070 computers connected with the internet allowing local residents to access the internet at discount prices or free of charge. Based on the project, more than 1,500 staffs of post offices and libraries will join training courses to improve their work skills. Photo: VNN The Ministry of Information and Communications on April 20 launched a 2.2 million USD pilot project, funded by the US Bill & Melinda Gates (BMG) Foundation, on popularising the use of computer and the internet in Vietnam . In the first phase, the project will establish 99 public internet access points at communal post offices, public libraries, school libraries and hospitals in northern Thai Nguyen, central Nghe An and southern Tra Vinh provinces. In the long term, it will contribute to the national information and communication development programmes in rural areas and the public telecom service supply proramme by 2010 towards the ultimate goal of making telecoms and internet service available to everyone.
