Terminally-ill mother worried over children’s future
Nguyen Thi Thuy Dung, born in 1982, is being treated at K Hospital in Hanoi. Her tumour has spread and increasingly affected her health. "It hurts so much that I can't stand up. We had no money left so I didn't intend to go to the hospital. But our neighbours were too kind, they gave me some money and helped take me to the hospital," Dung said. Her husband was an alcoholic and often beat her and the children when he was drunk. In late 2016, Dung divorced him and is living with her three children in a rented house in Vinh Phuc. She did every she could to support the children from factory worker to hospital janitor. Her landlord let her owe the rent and the schools gave financial supports to the children after being informed of their disadvantaged backgrounds. In September 2020, Dung was diagnosed with breast cancer after feeling tired and having chest pain. "My ex-husband died after we divorced. What will happen to my children?" she said.
