Bird flu fells nearly 9,000 marine creatures in Chile
Nearly 9,000 sea lions, penguins, otters and small cetaceans have died in an avian flu outbreak battering Chile's north coast, the South American country's fisheries service said Thursday. Since the beginning of 2023, more than 7,600 sea lions, 1,186 Humboldt penguins -- an endangered species that breeds only in Chile and Peru -- and several otters, porpoises and dolphins have been found dead along the coast, the Sernapesca service said in a statement. The disease was present in 12 of Chile's 16 regions, it added, and announced the activation of "surveillance protocols" along the coast, including burying affected animals in a bid to prevent further virus spread. The association said that many enterprises and farms were on the verge of collapse with thousands forced to narrow down production scale or temporarily halt operation due to prolonged losses. Due to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost of input materials increased to a record high while the consumption market fluctuated, pushing the prices of useful poultry products down considerably. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assigned the Ministry of Health to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to prepare a dossier to reclassify COVID-19 from group A to group B infectious disease and announce the end of the pandemic and submit it to the PM for consideration. WHO supplies Vietnam with emergency botulism antitoxins
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed its supply of emergency botulism antitoxins for Vietnam to treat some cases infected with the serious illness caused by clostridium botulinum, the Drug Administration of Vietnam under the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday. The WHO said that it would provide Vietnam with six vials of Botulism Antitoxin Heptavalent (BAT) for the emergency. The WHO and the ministry’s relevant agencies are stepping up efforts to complete all procedures to take the delivery of the antitoxins as soon as possible, said a representative of the administration. The administration also asked Cho Ray Hospital, which is treating some cases of botulism poisoning, to closely work with importers and distributors to seek more sources of antitoxins.
