Former cop gets 18 years in prison for shooting civilian to death
Nguyen Tan Phuoc, 41, a former sub-lieutenant with the Traffic Police Department in the southern province of Dong Nai, was found guilty of "murder" and "illegal use of military weapons." According to the indictment, Phuoc’s girlfriend opposed a relationship between Bui Viet Hai and her 19-year-old daughter, but had been unable to make them break up. On January 6 last year, after Phuoc’s girlfriend asked him to bring her daughter home, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He took a gun from the office and went to Hai's place to find his girlfriend’s daughter. After Hai told Phuoc that he didn’t know where she was staying, Hai pulled out the gun and shot him. Former top cops stand trial in massive gambling case
The trial opened in the Phu Tho People’s Court in the northern province, 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Hanoi. Phan Van Vinh, former director of the General Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, and Nguyen Thanh Hoa, former director of the ministry’s Departmentfor High-Tech Crime Prevention, are charged with "abuse of power or position in performance of official duties." Vinh was arrested in April and Hoa a month earlier. They could be sentenced to 5-10 years in prison. The 90 other defendants are charged with six different crimes: gambling, organizing gambling, money laundering, and trading illegal receipts. The trial, guarded by more than 500 cops on the opening day, is expected to last for 20 days. Hanoi man sentenced to death for murdering brother’s family over land dispute
A man in Hanoi has been sentenced to death for the murder of four people in his younger brother’s family over a conflict relating to their property. The municipal People’s Court held the trial of Nguyen Van Dong, 53, on Thursday and sentenced him the same day. The deceased victims are 50-year-old Nguyen Van Hai (Dong’s younger brother), 49-year-old Doan Thi Viet (Dong’s sister-in-law), Nguyen Thi Bac (Dong’s niece), and one-year-old Nguyen Huyen My (Dong’s grandniece).
