Vietnam wants to increase dragon fruit export to Australia, New Zealand
Dragon fruit is one of Vietnam's key export products to the two high-end markets. According to Nguyen Thi Thu Huong from the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia, Vietnam has exported fresh dragon fruits to Australia since 2017 with the export value growing every year. Vietnam's dragon fruit export turnover to Australia surged by 36 percent in 2020 and 14 percent in 2021. Besides Overseas Vietnamese’s distribution systems, the fruit has been sold at major retail supermarkets in Australia, Huong added. Dragon fruit is one of three types of fruit licensed to be imported into New Zealand. Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand Nguyen Van Trung said dragon fruit is Vietnam's most successful export fruit to New Zealand with consecutive growths from 2014 to now. Bùi Tú Uyên, Lương Anh Khánh Huyền and Trần Quỳnh Anh brought home US$100,000 from the Earth Prize competition, an initiative of the Switzerland-based Earth Foundation that encourages students to address environmental issues. The south-central province is one of the country’s driest and has inclement weather and little rainfall. Most farming areas face a shortage of water in the dry season and farmers used to grow only one rice crop a year. To mitigate the water shortage, the province built many irrigation works in the past years, and this is enabling rice farmers to grow more crops every year and get better yields. The Sông Quao reservoir in Hàm Thuận Bắc District was one of the first irrigation works, with construction beginning in 1988 and taking 10 years due to the difficult conditions and weather. US market opening up for agri-goods

(Photo: VNA) Fruit exporter Vina T&T Group is preparing the final step to export pomelos to the US, the seventh fruit that Vietnam is permitted to export to this market. “The US is a key export market of Vina T&T with 80 per cent of our export turnover. The advantage for Vietnam is its tropical fruits, and that the orchards have fruit right around the year,” said CEO Nguyen Dinh Tung. In 2021, the company’s export value to this market was $53 million, and the figure is expected to increase by 30 per cent this year. Along with Vina T&T, Pacific Foods JSC is also making efforts to increase export of products to the US and its 330 million-strong population. In March and April, the company exported 44 tonnes of products, including rice, fish sauce, spices, energy drinks, and instant coffee to the US.
