Ho Chi Minh City museum to create online exhibition showcasing historic treasures

The Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History is introducing a collection of never-before-seen antiques to the world through an online exhibition. The museum first began developing the exhibition in early February, when administrators realized an online display would allow them to showcase invaluable collections to the public while fulfilling a demand for museum going amongst those too worried to venture into public during the ongoing pandemic. The online exhibit can be found at baotanglichsutphcm.com.vn, where dozens of antiques are on display alongside their full details of origin, initial owners, and value. Hoang Anh Tuan, the museum’s director, said the online exhibition is an experiment in the application of technology to archive management and data extraction. “We have many collections that have yet to be exhibited. This online archive will help us gather information we can use to plan future events,” he said. Ivory seals from the Victor Thomas Holbé collection Currently on display in the online exhibition is a collection of works once owned by Victor Thomas Holbé (1857 – 1927), a French naval pharmacist who served as deputy Cochinchina governor and was known for his stunning art collection. After his death, the Society of Indochina Studies raised 45,000 Indochinese piastre to buy his collection of 2,160 pieces rooted in Asian cultures of Vietnam, China, Japan, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The collection, along with the society’s other pieces, was the foundation for the establishment of the Blanchard de la Brosse Museum (now the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History) in 1929. On its opening day, January 1, 1929, Holbé’s collection was exhibited in the museum’s main hall. Some pieces were also presented in France at the Eiffel Tower. The online archive is divided into four categories based on the material and origin of each piece, including ivory from Vietnam, China, and Japan; 18th- and 19th-century gem stones from China; ceramics …

New prospects for Vietnam-India trade, investment cooperation

The view was shared by diplomats and businesses who attended a Vietnam-India investment forum virtually held in Ho Chi Minh City on January 22. Don Lam, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of VinaCapital, one of the leading fund managers in Vietnam, noted that despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the domestic private economic sector has developed strongly, with 135,000 businesses registering to set up in 2020 capitalised at US$94 billion, up 29% in value compared to 2019. The businesses are ready for a economic recovery in the post COVID period, and promoting trade exchanges with India is one of the primary goals of Vietnam’s private economic sector this year, said the CEO. Statistics show Vietnam’s imports from India were just over US$2.7 billion in 2016, but the figure rose to more than US$4.5 billion in 2019. Major import items were iron and steel, machinery, equipment, pharmaceuticals, aquatic products, and auto spare parts Meanwhile, Vietnam’s exports to India almost tripled in the reviewed period, from US$2.6 billion to approximately US$ 6.7 billion. Major export items were mobile phones and accessories, computers and components, machinery, metals and chemicals. Alongside trade exchanges, Indian businesses consider Vietnam an attractive destination for investment in the fields of oil and gas, steel, minerals, tea, sugar, IT training, as well as a transit point for goods in the Southeast Asian region, said Don Lam. Pranay Verma, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, pointed out that Vietnam’s investment in India is currently about US$30 million, focusing on areas such as pharmaceuticals, IT, building materials and chemicals. In the other way, India’s investment in Vietnam reached US$ 900 million, and the figure even rose to US$1.9 billion if investment from the third parties is counted. According to the diplomat, both countries should promote bilateral cooperation in the areas of their strength, for instance food and farm produce processing, IT …

Universal Robots: Leveraging automation to reduce workplace injuries

Automation technology can reduce most common causes of injury in manufacturing environments Automation technology can help increase productivity and reduce up to 72 per cent of the common causes of injury in manufacturing environments. According to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Vietnam recorded 3,349 occupational accidents from January to June 2020 with total deaths numbering 378. The accidents were most prevalent in the manufacturing sector (27.41 per cent), construction (23.24 per cent), and services (12.35 per cent) while the remaining 37 per cent was spread across other sectors. Most local manufacturers are currently facing a growing skilled talent shortage which strains their overall productivity and growth. At the same time, employers are also facing immense costs associated with workplace-related injuries. “Cobots can perform tasks that may be dangerous or injury-prone for humans. With built-in safety features that slow the robot arm when a human enters its workspace, cobots can keep human colleagues safe from occupational injuries as they address repetitive and dangerous tasks in the manufacturing sector,” said James McKew, regional director of Asia-Pacific at Universal Robots. For more complex applications, Universal Robots has a comprehensive network of Certified System Integrators and Authorised Training Centres ready to support users with day-to-day operations after the initial installation. Universal Robots’ adjustable safety system allows companies to adjust a range of parameters to reduce the risks involved with implementing an industrial robot application. These include limiting the force, speed, power, or momentum of the robot, or restricting its workspace using safety boundaries. Productivity gains, along with the inherently safe design of cobot solutions, signify this new automation technology could reduce up to 72 per cent of the common causes of injury in manufacturing environments. “As we …
