The World Bank Group on Tuesday approved a $246-million aid package to help 786,000 vulnerable Lebanese reeling under the country's worst economic crisis in decades and the coronavirus pandemic. Lebanon, a country of more than six million, is grappling with its worst economic downturn since the 1975-1990 war. A spiralling coronavirus outbreak has compounded the crisis, forcing businesses shut and denying daily wage earners an income in a country where more than half the population lives in poverty. The World Bank "project will provide 147,000 extreme poor Lebanese households (approximately 786,000 individuals) with cash assistance for one year," a statement said. "Eligible households will receive a monthly transfer of 100,000 Lebanese pounds ($65) per household member, in addition to a flat amount of 200,000 Lebanese pounds per household," it said. Up to 466 tonnes would be given to Huong Hoa District, followed by Dakrong District with 285 tonnes. Thailand: Migrant workers get pandemic aid from businesses
Hanoi (VNA) - Global brands and small firms are actively providing assistance to migrant workers in Thailand, who are meeting difficulties after a jump in COVID-19 cases in the Southeast Asian nation. Thailand is "struggling" to respond to its worst coronavirus outbreak, with more than 200 new infections reported each day. The country has so far counted more than 11,000 cases, including 69 deaths. In Samut Sakhon, a province south of Bangkok where an outbreak began at a shrimp market late last year, many migrant workers are struggling to survive while local authorities imposed a social distancing order here since December last year. According to activists, an estimated 400,000 migrant workers, mainly from Myanmar, are working in the province. The health crisis has left many migrant workers unable to find jobs. Additional 40 million USD for Vietnamese bank to aid SMEs amid COVID-19
Hanoi (VNA) – The International Finance Corporation (IFC) – a member of the World Bank Group – has signed an agreement to provide another 40 million USD for the Orient Commercial Bank (OCB) to help it with the support of COVID-hit clients, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises. The one-year renewable senior loan offers OCB additional liquidity to continue lending to businesses as the bank is offering payment relief to its borrowers at the same time. OCB will prioritise clients working in sectors facing direct impact of COVID-19 like tourism and production as well as those related to disease response activities.
