US Vietnamese diaspora see light at end of Covid-19 tunnel

On February 15, CNN reported more than 53,800 new Covid-19 infections in the U.S., its lowest daily case count since October 2020 and a vastly different number from just the previous month, when infections were topping 200,000 a day. The number of new cases remained under 80,000 for the fourth day in a row Wednesday, while hospitalizations fell to their lowest level since November 10. The number of Covid-19 patients requiring treatment in intensive-care units (ICU) also fell, to 13,103, the sixth consecutive day the total has been below 15,000. "The situation in California is getting better, with the number of patients in ICU declining," said Ton That Binh, a Vietnamese man working in the medical sector in San Jose. He guessed that the state's pandemic level could move soon from purple (widespread) to red (substantial). Under California's color code, purple is applied for counties with more than seven daily new cases per 100,000 residents or a higher than 8 percent positivity rate; and red means four to seven new cases per 100,000, or a 5-8 percent positivity rate. Binh felt a key reason for the improvement was the higher numbers of people wearing masks and following social distancing rules. Also, herd immunity may have occurred in several areas where the number of cases was high enough. Remarkably, Americans have not had big crowd gatherings and protests since the inauguration of President Joe Biden, another factor leading to the declining cases. However, Binh also feared that the situation could be reversed in the next few weeks because of winter storms and power cuts; and a further case reduction could only be seen in the spring. Nguyen Quynh, a staff at the University of Missouri, Missouri, said Columbia City recorded an infection rate of 2.25 …

Boeing grounds 777s after engine fire in Colorado

Dozens of Boeing 777 planes were grounded worldwide Monday following a weekend scare on a United Airlines' plane that suffered engine failure and scattered airplane debris over suburban Denver. The incident on the flight out of Denver -- which quickly returned to the airport after part of the engine caught fire and broke off -- prompted United and other airlines to ground planes with the same Pratt & Whitney engine. While no one was injured in the Denver incident, the episode is the latest setback for Boeing, which only recently resumed deliveries of the long-grounded 737 MAX following two fatal crashes of that plane. Aviation experts said the incident especially raised questions about Pratt & Whitney and United over engine maintenance. "It's nothing like the MAX," said Teal Group aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia. "After all these years of service it is unlikely to be a design issue with the engine, certainly it is something to do with maintenance." The Denver incident followed a Japan Airlines 777 incident in December involving the same type of engine, as well as an engine problem in February 2018 on a United flight. "There might be a common theme" among the three incidents "but until the investigation is complete, we don't know that," said Scott Hamilton of Leeham News, an aviation news site. Boeing said all 128 of the 777s with Pratt & Whitney engines were grounded following Saturday's emergency landing of United flight 328 to Hawaii. Of the 128 planes, only 69 were in service while 59 were in storage. Besides United, which removed 24 planes from service, affected carriers included Japanese carriers, Japan Airlines and All Nippon and South Korean airlines, Asiana and Korean Air. Egyptian state newspaper Al Ahram reported Monday that national carrier Egyptair is grounding four planes with this type of engine. However, those aircraft were not presently in service, according to a source close to the manufacturer. British …

No Boeing 777 aircraft currently operational in Vietnam

The Hanoitimes - In the past, a number of Vietnamese airlines used to operate Boeing 777 aircraft, however, all had been liquidated in the 2017-18 period. All Vietnamese airlines have disused Boeing 777 planes, while no Boeing 777 flying in the country’s airspace. United Airlines' Boeing 777-200 at Denver International Airport. Photo: AFP/VNA A senior official from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAA) made the statement following news that dozens of Boeing 777 aircraft have been grounded across the world as a result of an engine failure on a United Airlines flight last Saturday. In the past, a number of airlines in Vietnam used to operate Boeing 777 aircraft, however, all had been liquidated in the 2017-18 period. “While the CAA has not given any decision to ground the plane model, but the fact that Boeing has recommended a temporarily suspension of Boeing 777 flights worldwide means no Boeing 777 would fly through Vietnamese airspace,” he added. The CAA also stressed despite many Vietnamese airlines planning to open Vietnam-US direct flight route have expressed interests on the new Boeing 777x, no airlines have so far signed a purchasing contract for the model. United Airlines is currently the only US airline operating Boeing 777 planes with Pratt & Whitney PW4000-112 turbines. United Flight 328, a Boeing 777-200 bound for Honolulu, made an emergency landing at Denver International Airport shortly after takeoff on February 20 after its right engine failed, with no injuries were reported on board the plane, reported CNBC. …
