Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia has held a ceremony to mark the return of cultural artifacts from abroad under the chair of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen . Addressing the event on March 17, PM Hun Sen appreciated the cooperation from other countries’ governments and the parties concerned, especially the US and the UK, in preventing the trafficking of cultural assets and returning Cambodian cultural antiquities, as well as UNESCO’s efforts in protecting and maintaining heritage of humankind. He praised tireless efforts by the country’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and relevant agencies to repatriate the priceless antiquities of the Cambodian people. Cambodia celebrates return of ‘priceless’ stolen Angkor jewelry
Gold crowns, necklaces and amulets were among the trove of treasures from the Angkor period, which ran from the ninth to 14th centuries AD when the Khmer empire dominated vast parts of Southeast Asia. The Cambodian culture ministry characterized the items -- expected to go on display at the national museum -- as "priceless cultural heritage". "I appeal to museums, institutions and Khmer artifact collectors to continue to return those items voluntarily to Cambodia," Hun Sen told the ceremony. "Heritage items should be returned to their country of origin." The culture ministry last month discreetly received 77 pieces from the family of the late, disgraced British art dealer Douglas Latchford. Two 10th-century sculptures recently returned by the United States were also displayed on Friday. SEA Games 32: Torch relay begins in Cambodia
At the torch-lighting ceremony (Photo: AKP/VNA) Phnom Penh (VNA) – The torch relay for the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA Games) and the 12th ASEAN Para Games began in Cambodia on March 21, with 45 days to go to the events. Cambodian King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, accompanied by Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and many other senior officials and Siem Reap province’s authorities, presided over the torch-lighting ceremony held at the famed Angkor Wat temple Siem Reap. The torch was then carried, circling Angkor Wat, and on March 22, it will leave Cambodia to tour other Southeast Asian nations and Timor Leste before returning to Cambodia and going around the Tonle Sap River till May 5 when the SEA Games - ASEAN Para Games officially open.
