The People's Committee of the central province of Thua Thien - Hue has sold its 50 percent stake in the Hue Brewery Co to the Denmark-based Carlsberg Group, the Committee's partner in the joint venture, at what insiders say is a dirt cheap price. In selling its entire stake in the brewery, the Thua Thien - Hue government received VND1.875 trillion, or US$90 million, from the Danish company. The sum includes around VND700 billion for "tangible value," which consists of the company's two breweries, and more than VND1.1 trillion for "intangible value," which is the nationally-known brand name Huda beer. Hue Brewery Co was founded in 1990, four years before the provincial people's committee placed it in a joint venture with Carlsberg, with each party holding a 50 percent stake worth around $9 million. The government of Thua Thien-Hue province has approved a project to preserve the Hue royal citadel, a world cultural heritage, at the cost of nearly VND1.3 trillion or $62 million. This is the largest-ever project to restore and preserve the Hue relic, performed by the Center for Preservation of Hue Ancient Capital. With $62 million, the outer layer of the Hue royal citadel, with a perimeter of 10km, will be repaired. Nearly 1,000 families who live in this area will be removed. The entire dike and ditch system as well as the citadel wall will be mended. This project will be implemented from the end of 2011 to 2015. Of the VND1.3 trillion of capital, VND1.28 billion will be allocated from the state budget. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has urged authorities of the former imperial capital of Hue in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue to take full advantage of its historical values and cultural heritages to make a breakthrough for the province’s tourism sector, the Government news website chinhphu.vn reports. The central city, home to Nguyen Dynasty which reigned the country from 1802 until 1945, has been dubbed by the Prime Minister as the “Kyoto of Viet Nam,” characterized by the abundance of historical and cultural sites, including the former Hue Imperial Citadel and royal tombs of Nguyen Dynasty’s kings. Nearly 100 hectares of the artificial forests in A Luoi district have been chopped down by local residents for timber and farming, while local authorities have been powerless. The deforestation has made drinking water of hundreds of households severely polluted.Forest devastated One of the "hottest points" of the deforestation in A Luoi district is the 321 ward, somewhere between Huong Nguyen and Hong Tien communes. The red earth road linking the 49A highway to the ward 321 has been ploughed up by the trucks which carry timber on the road every day. What Lao dong's reporters could see in the ward 321 after one hour of walking on a track through the forest, was the wild land plots. Authorities in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue have requested a stop to app-based taxi firm Grab’s operations in the locality. Nguyen Van Cao, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, made the request at a meeting with local businesses on January 5. The Grab office in Thua Thien-Hue Cai urged the provincial Department of Transport to stop Grab taxi service immediately without waiting for the Ministry of Transport’s instruction. Despite not being in the list of localities where Grab services are piloted, the firm has launched GrabCar and GrabTaxi in Hue City. It has even opened an office at 31 Hoang Quoc Viet Street with a hotline phone number. Following this, the province’s Department of Transport asked the Ministry of Transport for measures to deal with the situation.
