Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performs over 1,100 organ transplants in three decades
Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has carried out more than 1,100 organ transplants over the past 30 years, with a high success rate equivalent to the figures recorded in other countries, said hospital director Nguyen Tri Thuc at its 30th kidneyversary on Thursday morning. The event gathered representatives of Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, the municipal government, and leading experts on organ transplantation in the country. Organ transplants record high success rates Given the support of experts at home and abroad, the hospital managed to perform a kidney transplant in its first two cases on December 28 and 29, 1992, just a few days after the country’s first organ transplant was done, Thuc recalled. This milestone helped lay a solid foundation for the strong growth of the hospital’s kidney and organ transplantation. The number of organ transplants has risen over time and exceeded 1,100 to date. Cho Ray Hospital was also a pioneer in adopting measures to expand a source … [Read more...] about Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performs over 1,100 organ transplants in three decades
‘Climate time bomb ticking’, emissions must urgently be cut, UN chief says
U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that the "climate time bomb is ticking" as he urged rich nations on Monday to slash emissions sooner after a new assessment from scientists said there was little time to lose in tackling climate change. "The rate of temperature rise in the last half century is the highest in 2,000 years," he said. "Concentrations of carbon dioxide are at their highest in at least 2 million years. The climate time-bomb is ticking." In a recorded address, Guterres described the sixth "synthesis report" from the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as "a survival guide for humanity" and urged developed countries to commit to reaching net zero emissions by the earlier date of around 2040. The synthesis report summarized findings from three expert assessments published between 2021 and 2022 that looked at the physical science, impacts, and mitigation of climate change. The summary report is designed to provide clarity for policymakers … [Read more...] about ‘Climate time bomb ticking’, emissions must urgently be cut, UN chief says

(Photo: thegioididong.com) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Retail stocks have dropped significantly due to the decline in business results in the context of the global economic recession and high interest rates. Petrosetco (PET) has been almost flat since the beginning of February while Petrosetco Distribution JSC (PSD) is finding the bottom. This duo has dropped by 60-65% of the market price compared to their peak. The Phu Nhuan Jewelry Group (PNJ) and FPT Retail (FRT) have been struggling since the end of January. These two stocks have fallen by 16% and 38% respectively from the peak. The recent plunge in retail stocks partly came from the decline in business results. … [Read more...] about Retail stocks drop amid economic downturn and high interest rates
Trade recovers strongly since reopening
A year since Vietnam reopened after a global pandemic, the country has seen trade recovering strongly. The decision, according to economists and policymakers, was a necessity to unshackle trade and industries after a prolonged period of time in which hundreds of factories were forced to close down or reduce production capacity in compliance with strong social distancing rules. The reopening, which was made possible with a nationwide vaccination program, has allowed the supply chain to come back, giving a much-needed boost to industries and trade as well as to the country's export sector. Than Duc Viet, General Director of May 10, one of the country's largest textile companies, said strong social distancing measures during the pandemic significantly disrupted the company's operation and threatened its ability to maintain production at times. He said the worst part of it was not knowing when his factory's doors could be closed. "Our approach during the pandemic was to move as … [Read more...] about Trade recovers strongly since reopening
Tourism breakthrough within reach
Stakeholders have much to say about the current state of the tourism industry, and what must be done Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a tourism recovery conference on March 15 and talked to management agencies and tourism businesses about removing obstacles for the industry to thrive once again. Despite being one of the first Southeast Asian countries to fully reopen to international tourism after the pandemic, Vietnam’s tourism industry still trails other countries in the region. The PM raised a series of questions about tourism promotion, competitive advantages, products, and visa policies – all factors that are considered to be subjective causes for Vietnam’s tourism to fail its foreign tourism targets thus far. “Tourism cannot develop alone, and tourism cannot develop if culture and the entertainment industry do not develop,” PM Chinh said. He directed the tourism industry to build green and sustainable tourism products, finance tourism activities, and develop … [Read more...] about Tourism breakthrough within reach

Their time to slime: who will be ‘Mollusc of the Year’?
Will you choose beauty? The carnivorous Wavy Bubble Snail, perhaps, with its billowing skirts shimmering under UV light. Or will it be age? Like the venerable 500-year-old Methuselah oyster. Or will you be seduced by the leopard slug with its gymnastic mating ritual? The list of finalists for Mollusc of the Year has something for everyone. In a public vote ending Sunday, five species of soft-bodied invertebrates are vying to follow in the illustrious trail of previous winners, dubbed the "world's most beautiful snail" and "weirdest octopus". The grand prize? The triumphant species will have its genome decoded to better understand its evolution and potential benefits to humanity. The International Mollusc of the Year competition, which kicked off this month, is run by the LOEWE Centre for Translational Biodiversity Genomics, based in Germany. Organisers have whittled down the field from 85,000 mollusc species, thanks to nominations by researchers from around the world.
