What do the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and Long Bien Bridge have in common? All three were designed by the great French architect and engineer Gustave Eiffel. All three are iconic and highly symbolic. It is hard to imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower, New York without the Statue of Liberty and Hanoi without the Long Bien Bridge. In a monumentally ironic and ugly twist, the Long Bien Bridge was heavily bombed by the custodians of the Statue of Liberty during the Vietnam War. But it survived U.S. bombs and is still used by trains, motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrian to cross the majestic Red River. I always get a thrill when I cross the bridge on my motorbike. I can't think of too many bridges in the world that have so much character and sustain their own little world. Hanoians are very fond of their bridge. It is almost like a living creature. You want to treat it with kindness and respect. Which is what this story is about. For some time now, a gang of spray-can vandals … [Read more...] about Long Bien Bridge gets ‘bombed’ again

Doctors said there was no hope. The baby would die. The broken-hearted father signed the cremation papers. He could not take her to their native place for burial because the premature baby’s mother, his wife, was still in the hospital and had to be tended to. Later, the sad parents went to the hospital to collect the ashes, but could not. They returned home, accepting their fate. But... In a story that twists at every turn with ifs and buts, the baby did not die. No chance “When I was six months pregnant, doctors at the district hospital said my baby had congenital hydrocephalus (a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates within the brain and increases pressure inside the skull). They advised me to give her up. “Even if she was born, she would not survive (for long), they noted,” said Khong Thi Thu Trang, sitting in her small house in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre. Trang and her husband did not lose hope immediately. They went to the Tu Du … [Read more...] about A baby dies, survives and reunites with long-lost Vietnamese mother

Laboring over the age-old question "What do women look for in men?", scientists added an item to the list Wednesday: legs slightly longer than average, with a good shin-to-thigh ratio. Long arms, however, fail to impress. In an online survey, some 800 American women preferred faceless male figures "when their legs are slightly longer than average" - but not too long, said studyco-author Thomas Versluys of the University of Cambridge. The women, aged 19-76 from different racial groups, were asked to judge the attractiveness of computer-generated male silhouettes with slight differences in leg- and arm length. The respondents preferred legs that were just above the average length, but not too long. They also found figures most attractive "when the ratio between the lower and upper limb segment - shin and thigh - was average," Versluys told AFP. However, "we also found that arm length has no effect on attractiveness." In the study of sexual selection in humans, limb proportions are known … [Read more...] about Long legs turn women’s heads, arm length immaterial: study
