Photo courtesy of the Tan Son Nhat Airport's Customs Department A man was arrested Friday for allegedly trafficking weapons into Vietnam after his suitcase was found with three pistols at HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat Airport. Previously, Tan Son Nhat customs personnel found the suitcase abandoned at the airport, with three pistols and four magazines - a chamber for holding a supply of cartridges - inside. The suitcase was determined to be from a flight from Paris, France, to Ho Chi Minh City. An investigation ensued and the man was arrested in Hanoi. The unnamed man, 41, said he successfully smuggled the suitcase through a French airport in Paris, but upon seeing how tight security checks were in Tan Son Nhat, he got scared and decided to abandon the suitcase and escaped north to Hanoi. With doctors saying her chances of survival were slim, Amandine Duran, aka Do Thi Ngoc Chau, was left at the Tu Du Hospital days after birth by her parents in 1995. She survived and was transferred to the Go Vap Child Protection Center. When she was six months old, she was adopted by a childless French couple. "Since my parents didn’t have children, I was a precious gift. I was given many opportunities, to study abroad in the U.K. and travel to many places," Chau said. Growing up, she was a shy girl, always hiding behind her mother to avoid public scrutiny and attention, aware of that her black hair and dark skin made her different. Poster of the French Literature Week in Hanoi (Source: Institut Francais Vietnam) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - An exhibition displaying posters of book covers opened on November 5 ahead of the French Literature Week in Hanoi. Vietnamese versions of the covers at the exhibition include French works which have been popular in Vietnam over the past 10 years. The books include Irene Nemirovsky’s French Suite; Françoise Sagan’s Hello Sadness and The Elegance of Widows; David Foenkinos’s Delicacy and Romain Gary’s The Life Before Us. The exhibition will also feature information about the writers and the movies being screened. The exhibition will run until November 18 at the French Cultural Centre (L’espace). The week proper will begin on November 13 with a talk about cinema in Gary’s works.
