VNR to keep divesting its subsidiaries Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR) wants to continue the divestment of its subsidiaries, aiming to improve competitiveness and attract investors to enhance efficiency after three years on a downward spiral. A report on the results of the first six months of 2018 from VNR shows that all of its business indicators are on the rise, with revenue amounting to some VND4,000 billion, up 17.8% year-on-year, and with profit reaching VND106 billion. According to the report, the growth in revenue results from a series of renovation solutions for railway services, including replacing new cars, flexibly increasing and decreasing ticket prices depending on the market demand and linking to the tourism sector to attract passengers in groups. In early 2016, a book street was established in downtown Ho Chi Minh City in order to encourage citizens, especially youngsters, to read. The street, located on Nguyen Van Binh Street in District 1, is meant to nurture a reading culture through various activities and highlight the value and significance of books. Editor’s note: Le Ngoc Tan shares his ideas in this entry submitted to the "Ky Vong Viet Nam 20 Nam Toi" ("My Expectations for Vietnam in 20 Years") writing contest, a competition organized by the World Bank in Vietnam and Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that encourages local youths to write down their wildest, yet feasible, dreams about how Vietnam will change in 20 years’ time. I recently had a wondrous dream. In the dream, I was taken to Vietnam in 2035 in a miraculous, imaginary time warp invented by my best friend. An intriguing flight The miracle time warp sent me hovering above National Highway 1A, one of the country’s arteries. From above, I could see the levelly asphalted highway boasting … [Read more...] about A fabulous dream

Perhaps I have been lucky but as I leave after my first visit here, these are the thoughts I will take away. Branding a city is a delicate, sophisticated business simply because of the range and age of people you are reaching out to. And Ha Noi is a developing city with, I am sure, short-term and long-term goals. You Asked, published every Tuesday, gives you the opportunity to ask all the questions a visitor to Viet Nam or an expatriate living here long-term might have. Your Say, published on Fridays, enables you to express your opinions about a topic or issue raised by the Editor. Next week: An increasing number of Vietnamese children and teenagers are being diagnosed with mental disorders. Nearly 1,000 children with mental illnesses are admitted to the … [Read more...] about What do you associate with the name Ha Noi?
