French PM fails to appease strikers with pension reform plan
Paris has been hard hit by the transport strikes. (AFP/Aurore MESENGE) Public transport networks in Paris and other cities have been paralysed by the walkout, which began last Thursday and left shops, hotels and restaurants fearing for their bottom line. Edouard Philippe insisted the government would pursue its objective of creating a new points-based pension system that fuses the country's 42 existing plans into one, but said the reform was "not a battle". He declared the new-look scheme would be fairer and guarantee better basic coverage for the most vulnerable workers, insisting "there will be no winners and no losers". Around 200 youngsters attended the movie screening, 150 of them students from universities in Hanoi. In his remarks, Giorgio Aliberti, head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, said: “We chose the movie because not only it’s an interesting documentary which showcases the underwater world, but also sends a strong message on the negative impact of climate change. It is also in line with the growing … [Read more...] about EU aims to raise public awareness of climate change impact in Vietnam
Working the graveyard shift in Hanoi
At midnight on a weekday a couple walks out of a convenience store on Hang Bong Street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Nearby, three people are eating ice cream and yogurt they had just bought at the store. Hang Bong is one of the capital’s most crowded shopping streets, but at midnight, when it is time for businesses to shut down, it goes quiet. Only three 24/7 convenience stores and a few hotels remain open afterward. Some 200 meters from the convenience store, Quoc Huy, a hotel receptionist is at his desk waiting for two Filipino guests. The hotel car has picked them up at the airport and is headed back. Huy will help them check in at around 3 a.m. Guests arriving at 2 or 3 a.m. is pretty common in October, the peak tourist season. "It’s like we don’t want our guests if we close at midnight," the 24-year-old said. Working along with Huy are three other receptionists of similar age. The bar where Masayoshi Kimoto works continues to take orders from customers at … [Read more...] about Working the graveyard shift in Hanoi
