Gov’t ensures dual targets of pandemic prevention, economic development

Major supply systems join hands in supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The COVID-19 prevention and control work needs to ensure the twin targets of pandemic prevention and economic recovery and development so as not to affect production and business activities, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said at the Government’s regular press conference on March 2. Answering a reporter’s query on stepping up the consumption of agricultural products of pandemic-hit localities, Hai said that over the past time, the Government has instructed ministries, sectors and localities to carry out measures to ensure the implementation of the twin targets. When the pandemic showed signs of worsening in Hai Duong and Quang Ninh provinces, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc issued Directive No.05 on January 28 on urgent COVID-19 prevention and control measures, in which the Government leader assigned Chairpersons of provincial and municipal People’s Committees to decide social distancing measures to be used based on the level of risk of each area. However, as several localities put overemphasis on pandemic prevention and control, they imposed several measures which caused difficulties to the circulation of goods, particularly farm produce, in pandemic-hit areas, particularly Hai Duong province. The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has put forward solutions to address those difficulties, such as working directly with major domestic supply systems and major firms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to help with the sale of farm produce. It has also worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities to seek measures to ease consumers’ concerns about agricultural products from disease-affected areas. Mekong Delta provinces step up COVID preventive measures

Border guards on patrol in Dong Thap (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Mekong Delta provinces are tightening preventive measures against the COVID-19 pandemic , especially along land borders and coastal entry points, after two new cases were reported in the region. On February 28, a 37-year-old man in Hau Giang province who worked aboard a barge bringing cargo from Cambodia’s Phnom Penh tested positive and was quarantined immediately. He had arrived along with another man at the Thuong Phuoc International Sea Port in Dong Thap’s Hong Ngu district on February 26. Authorities have identified three people who came into close contact with the patient. Earlier, on February 23, the province’s COVID-19 task force quarantined a Vietnamese woman who had entered illegally from Cambodia with the disease. Authorities traced 11 people who had been in contact with her. Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Pham Thien Nghia has instructed relevant agencies to tighten control over border and coastal entry points. They should exchange information with their counterparts in neighbouring countries to make plans to preclude the spread of the disease, he said. Border guards should set up a hotline for locals to report people coming from COVID-hit areas, he added. Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Doan Tan Buu said everyone entering from Cambodia have to be quarantined and tested. The People’s Committee has approved the suspension of festivals and other events and closure of amusement places in Hong Ngu and Tan Hong districts and Hong Ngu city. Educational establishments will be closed from March 1 to 6. At the border in the provinces of Long An, An Giang and Kien Giang, soldiers are on duty on 24 hours a day at temporary checkpoints. Red Spring Festival expects to collect over 4,000 blood units Young people donate their blood In his opening remarks, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) Bach Quoc Khanh, who is head of the festival’s organizing board, said that the festival has been held annually since 2008 to address blood shortages after the lunar New Year holiday, and gradually changed public awareness of blood donation. After 13 editions, the festival has collected over 85,000 blood units and become the annual biggest blood donation event. Khanh took the occasion to express his gratitude for donators nationwide. The 14th edition is taking place from March 1-7 at the NIHBT headquarters, and three fixed places - 26 Luong Ngoc Quyen in Hoan Kiem district, 132 Quan Nhan in Thanh Xuan district, and Valley 122 of Lang Street in Dong Da district. The organizing board expects to receive over 4,000 blood units during this year’s festival, which then will be allocated to nearly 180 hospitals and medical establishments of 28 provinces and cities in the northern region. Fatal coach crash kills three, injures 4 in Dong Thap A serious traffic accident caused by a passenger coach took place on National Highway 54 in Tan Thanh Commune of Dong Thap Province’s Lai Vung District this morning, March 1, killing three and injuring four people. The passenger coach with plate number 51B-17273 driven by Tran Van Nam, aged 41, was heading from Vam Cong Bridge to Vinh Long Province when it plowed into a group of 10 bike riders and killed a rider, identified as Tran Van An, aged 59.
