New era of horse racing dawns in VN (28-02-2005) Terry Hartney Ahead by a leg: Riders sprint to the finish in the horse racing at HCM City's Phu Tho Stadium yesterday. — VNA/VNS Photo The day began with a cigar and a horse which was trying to eat it. The horse was called Pines Parade, a big bay mare which had come from Australia nearly six months ago as part of 39 other sleek thoroughbred racehorses to revolutionize the sport in Viet Nam. Last week, we asked our readers about their opinion about a proposal to legalise sports betting. Here are some of their comments. Claudio Miozzari, Swiss, Ha Noi I do not bet on sports, but I think it is good to legalise the activity instead of letting it flourish underground. A lot of money is gambled and no one seems to know where it all goes. Not all of it is paid out on winning bets. In Switzerland, the state lottery "Swisslos" has a monopoly on sports betting. It is the only betting organisation allowed to sponsor sporting events or to advertise gambling. One good thing about Swisslos is that 31 per cent of total revenue is used to support sports projects and infrastructure. This means that if I don't win, I still get something out of it. Lance Cohen, Australian, New South Wales With this proposal, the Vietnamese Government can access revenue that, through illegal … [Read more...] about Tighter controls needed on sports betting
Italy's return to the top ranks by reaching the final of Euro 2012 has added a few more words to the world's considerable footballing lexicon. Defender Domenico Criscito even had to give up his place just before the team's departure for Poland after his room at the team's training camp was searched. But after the "Totonero" (Black market lottery) in 1980 and the match-fixing "Calciopoli" ( Football Monopoly) in 2006, Italy won the World Cup. A good sign? "Biscotto" Literally, "biscuit" or "cookie". Derived from horse-racing where the phrase "to give a biscuit" meant "to dope a horse", the term became synomous in football with two sides "having an arrangement". Italy still has bad memories of a 2-2 draw between Sweden and Denmark in Euro 2004, which saw both Scandinian sides go through from the group stage at their expense. Italy was afraid that a 2-2 draw between Spain and Croatia in the group stage this time round would have had the same result. But the Spanish won 1-0 with a … [Read more...] about Italy add to football’s rich lexicon
