Charity acts warm the poor’s hearts in Hanoi in pandemic time

The Hanoitimes - Many benefactors are giving free meals, face masks and essential items to alleviate the hardships of the destitute in Hanoi city every day during Covid-19 pandemic time. Times of crisis can often bring out the best in people. The Covid-19 evolution remains unpredictable in Hanoi, thus deeds of many kindhearted Hanoians’ have been of great encouragement for the poor’ hearts in the capital city to overcome the pandemic time. The shining examples not only show kindness of Vietnamese people amid the pandemic, but also surprise a lot of foreigners in Vietnam and in the world. Donation of food and essential items Many benefactors are giving free meals, face masks and essential items to alleviate the hardships of the destitute people in Hanoi city every day during Covid-19 pandemic time. The Hanoi city government has urged shops that sell non-essential goods and provide services to temporarily shut down to prevent Covid-19 from spreading. Although people agreed with the authority move, it has also made life of the poor more difficult, leaving some with no means to earn a living from. Therefore, kindhearted Hanoians have provided food for free to the destitute who have been left with no livelihoods due to the nationwide business shutdown to prevent the pandemic, working under the motto “Take one if you are in hardship. Tradition winning out over tourism

Photo courtesy of Taboo Hội An local Võ Tấn Tân and his craftsmen created the Taboo Bamboo Workshop in the middle of the Cẩm Thanh nipa palm forest as a sustainable bamboo craft and preservation centre in the ancient town in central Việt Nam. The workshop's skilled craftsmen make more than 200 unique traditional designs, from furniture and toys to household commodities and decorative items, under a low-carbon emissions model. “This is the first sustainable, low-carbon production site in Hội An,” according to Tân. “We create products with our hands instead of relying on mass production via machinery. Our innovative designs and creations are all hand-made; we only use mechanical tools to smooth the finished products Products from the Taboo workshop have been designed with recycling and environmentally-friendly consumption in mind, and Hội An has been promoting it as the first “zero” waste site in the country. “Our craftsmen come up with innovative designs from bamboo, with products including cups, toys, lanterns, electric car bodies, bicycles, furniture, and interior décor,” Tân said. “Traditional production techniques have been passed down through the generations, and most villagers have some level of experience in making handicrafts from bamboo and nipa palm leaves.” He was the first in Cẩm Thanh Village to create a bamboo bicycle and also built the first-ever bamboo electric car. Former Sagri general director, former HCMC vice chairman face charges The Saigon Times Former Sagri general director Le Tan Hung (L) and former HCMC vice chairman Tran Vinh Tuyen - PHOTO: MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SECURITY HCMC - Investigators at the Ministry of Public Security have proposed indicting Le Tan Hung, former general director of Saigon Agriculture Incorporated (Sagri), and 15 others, including former HCMC vice chairman Tran Vinh Tuyen, for allegedly causing losses of over VND672 billion for the State. The Investigative Police Agency on March 6 issued the findings of an investigation into violations at Sagri, the local media reported. Hung and Nguyen Thi Thuy, chief accountant of Sagri, were accused of appropriating assets and violating regulations on the use and management of State assets, causing losses and wastefulness. In addition, Tuyen; former Sagri Chairman Van Trong Dung; Tran Trong Tuan, former deputy head of the HCMC Party Committee’s office; and five others were charged with violating regulations on the use and management of State assets, causing losses and wastefulness. According to the findings of the investigation, Hung abused his position to direct Thuy and Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, an employee of Sagri’s human resources division, to work with two tour operators, VYC Travel Company and PIT Company, to draw up 10 contracts worth VND13 billion to organize overseas study trips in 16 countries for Sagri employees. However, 40 of 70 employees were found to have not participated in these trips. Moreover, Hung asked his subordinates to complete procedures and proposed the municipal government approve the transfer of a residential project in Phuoc Long B Ward of District 9 (currently Thu Duc City) to Phong Phu Corporation at VND168 billion, while the project was 80% complete and was not appraised at the time, leading to losses of VND348 billion for the State at the transfer time and VND672 billion at the time the case was …
