Ho Chi Minh City to spend over $176mn on medical equipment at 3 hospitals
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council on Tuesday decided to source over VND4.3 trillion (US$176.1 million) from its budget to purchase medical equipment for three hospitals at its gateways. Of the total, the Thu Duc Regional General Hospital will receive over VND1.45 trillion ($59.5 million); Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital, over VND1.49 trillion ($61.1 million); and Cu Chi Regional General Hospital, some VND1.36 trillion ($55.8 million). The city will purchase the equipment between 2023 and 2025. The plan to acquire medical equipment for these hospitals is vital to ensure that they will have sufficient equipment after being put into operation. Residents in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces can access high-quality healthcare services, while these hospitals can attract high-skilled medical workers. Ho Chi Minh City to renovate downtown opera house
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council has approved a plan to revitalize the Municipal Theatre, also known as the Saigon Opera House, as the theater has fallen into a state of degradation. The renovation of the opera house, which is considered as one of the city’s iconic symbols, is estimated to cost VND337 billion (US$13.9 million). The repair is aimed at preserving the architectural values of the establishment to make it a further attractive destination for international tourists visiting the city and a venue for important festivals and events. Chau Huy Toan, who has worked at the opera house for 33 years, said he has witnessed the building undergo two renovations. Japanese Crown Prince visits late President Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house
Japanese Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, together with Vice-State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, paid a visit to late President Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house and fish pond on Thursday morning. Their jaunt was taken after talks between the top Vietnamese official and Japan’s crown prince. Vice-State President Xuan chaired a welcome ceremony for Akishino and Kiko at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on Thursday morning. The stilt house and fish pond are situated in the late President Ho Chi Minh relic site. These places were the late president’s living and working space. The visit to the relic site was part of Akishino’s ongoing Vietnam trip, which will last until Monday next week. Crown Prince Akishino, 58, is the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito. Ho Chi Minh City to open first metro line next July
Ho Chi Minh City’s first metro line, which stretches from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to Suoi Tien Theme Park in Thu Duc City, will be put into commercial operation in July 2024. The Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR), the project’s investor, announced the opening date in its report recently sent to the municipal Department of Transport. The city’s first metro line project is currently 96 percent complete, while its contractors and consulting units are speeding up the remaining components of the link. All construction and equipment installation processes are scheduled to finish this year, while work on footbridge subprojects will be completed by June 2024. Additionally, the processes of evaluating the safety of the metro line and training workers will be done by the end of the first half of 2024. Lantern village in Ho Chi Minh City busy ahead of Mid-Autumn Festival
As the Mid-Autumn Festival is five days away, a busy atmosphere pervades Phu Binh lantern making village, which is now over 50 years old, in District 11, Ho Chi Minh City. Artisans in the village manually make lanterns with various shapes and colors. There are many phases to complete hand-made lanterns, including choosing bamboo trees, cutting bamboo sticks to make frames, painting plastic papers for wrapping the frames, and decorating the lanterns. Artisan Nguyen Trong Thanh said traditional lanterns using candles feature a great cultural value of Vietnamese people. Children and those who are interested in cultural and artistic values still prefer them. Stuffed bunny toys are attached to bamboo lanterns.
