Xoi man (savory sticky rice) is a staple of Vietnamese cuisine, universally loved for its inexpensive price and bold flavor. It is available in practically every neighborhood in Saigon from early morning to late at night. Sticky rice has long been a local favorite thanks to how long it keeps eaters full. Each stall has its own way of cooking different types of glutinous rice to get the perfect stickiness. Because of its high calorie content, glutinous rice's starch keeps diners full for longer than other starchy items like vermicelli, bread, and rice noodles. Inadequacies in salary are causing a shift of workers among foreign-invested enterprises. Taiwanese-backed Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone contract manufacturer, is complaining about a battle to attract more affordable labour with its Chinese rivals in Vietnam. Young Liu, CEO and chairman of Foxconn, this month accused the company’s Chinese competitors of setting up campuses near its base in Vietnam to get closer to its workers. Foxconn’s campus, located in the northern province of Bac Ninh, currently employs around 60,000 workers, and the company has plans to increase that number over the next two years. Once the battle for workers becomes more serious, the company may face the risk of employee shortages. Singaporean-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) maintained its forecast for Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 6.5 percent this year despite global uncertainty brought about by the conflict in Ukraine and soaring commodity prices. UOB recently released its report on the economic growth of markets around the world, including Vietnam. The report pegged its forecast for Vietnam’s GDP growth at 6.5 percent and core inflation rate at 3.7 percent this year. UOB’s forecast for the country’s GDP growth is in line with the Vietnamese government’s goal of hitting a 6-6.5 percent economic expansion for 2022. The bank's report predicted that the country’s GDP growth will reach 7.6 percent in the third quarter of this year. However, the inflation rate could rise to five percent in 2023 due to various risks and challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and related sanctions.
