Director of the Yok Don National Park Do Quang Tung has proposed that the Vietnam Administration of Forestry equip the park with horses for use in forest patrol and to improve the efficiency of the patrol. In many cases of deforestation, rangers of the park, located in Buon Don District in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, could not arrest illegal loggers as they had no means of transport to pursue the lawbreakers, Tung said. Patrolling with horses will help rangers to come to the scene rapidly and therefore deal with deforestation more effectively than at present, he said. In addition, sitting on horses will also help forest protection officers extend their range of vision and thereby improve their ability to detect illegal logging, he added. Traditional fishermen on fishing boats from some provinces in central Vietnam got a bumper catch during the first days of the Year of the Horse. "We're surprised by the large amount of fish that we caught in the first trip. Everybody is happy", said fisherman Le Van Vu, owner of a fishing boat that caught nearly 10 tons of anchovy. Police from Da Lat city in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong have arrested three men for stealing three horses from a tourist site at the city's Prenn Waterfall on Monday. The arrested include Bui Thia, 32, of Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province; and two brothers, Nguyen Van Phuoc Loc, 34, and Nguyen Thanh Linh, 25, both from Phan Rang-Thap Cham City in Ninh Thuan Province. Thia, a horse trader, was the instigator of the theft, who hired Loc and Linh to steal the horses, investigators said. According to the case file, the center on June 17 discovered the disappearance of the horses, which had been tied to a girder on the Prenn Bridge in the Prenn tourist center. The horses were there for tourists to watch and photograph, the center said. The theft was reported to police, who then launched an investigation to track down the culprits. An investor has imported 40 racehorses from Australia to compete in Phu Tho Horse Racetrack in Ho Chi Minh City as part of an upgrade project expected to give the track a facelift and attract big crowds.
