Intel to fund high-tech computer lab at RMIT By Binh Nguyen - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – RMIT International University Vietnam has announced Intel Corporation’s sponsorship of the establishment of a new high-tech computer laboratory for the Australian-owned school’s new Masters program in engineering. Intel will provide US$210,000 to develop the lab to assist in the program on electronic and computer engineering at the Saigon South campus of RMIT Vietnam in HCMC’s District 7 under a just-signed agreement between the two parties. RMIT told the Daily that the facility would have over 30 workstations, a video conferencing system linked to RMIT’s engineering lab in the Australian city of Melbourne, test and measurement equipment, micro development systems among others. IT skills vital as high-tech giants expand (12-06-2009) by Huong Vu HA NOI — Chasing lucrative returns during the rapid development of the high-tech industry, multi-national tech giants are rushing to start operations in Viet Nam. The giants are complaining loudly about a dearth of technically-adept workers coming out of colleges and engineers who require additional training. Despite the widespread economic downturn, the IBM started expanding its presence a month ago by launching a technology centre and signed two research agreements with Vietnamese universities. Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems are also investing in the emerging tech industry. The US corporate giant Intel is building a US$1 billion semiconductor factory on the Ha Noi Highway in HCM City. Foreign investors fuel rise in high-tech trends
Japanese, American and Taiwanese companies are pouring large sums of money into the hi-tech industry in Viet Nam, in light of the country's recent membership to the World Trade Organisation, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. Many Japanese corporations including Sanyo, Matsushita, Sony as well as Fujitsu, Toshiba and Nidec, are stepping up their investments in the country. The Japanese Canon company, after investing 100 million USD in a laser printer factory in Thang Long Industrial Park in Ha Noi, will invest 100 million USD in a new factory in northern Bac Ninh province. That additional investment will turn Viet Nam into Canon's biggest laser printer production base, with a capacity of 700,000 products a month, or 80 per cent of the company's annual output. Canon hopes to earn 1 billion USD in turnover this year. It has invested nearly 300 million USD in Viet Nam, company officials said.
