VietNamNet Bridge – Seeing Tran Khuong and his daughter, Tran Le Kha Ai, talking happily to each other, it is hard to believe that they have been through an arduous 19-year journey. Tran Khuong has made Ai, who suffered from hearing and speech disabilities, into a girl who can hear and speak. Moreover, Ai will soon graduate from a high school for able-bodied students, and sit for an examination to enter the university like other teenage girls. Behind her achievements are the endless efforts of her father who has patiently taught her how to speak and has accompanied her in her studies over the years. Twenty years ago, Khuong left his hometown in Quang Ngai Central Province to settle in HCM City, full of hope for his family’s new life and aspirations for his new-born daughter. However, his happiness did not last long when he discovered that 20-month-old Ai did not behave like any other toddler her age and did not respond to even the loudest noise. In fear, her parents had … [Read more...] about Father teaches deaf daughter how to speak

Barking up the right tree: Thai Binh teaches the value of reforestation (13-07-2007) Dai Doan Ket (Great Unity) newspaper spoke with Dinh Dang Luong, chairman of the Thai Binh Fatherland Front, about how replanting forests can reduce poverty and create jobs. Since 2000, 43,000ha of forest have been planted. How did you achieve this result? Firstly it is thanks to the province's policies of land and forestry grants. People have both rights and responsibility over the land and forests after receiving the grants, resulting in more effective afforestation, forest management and protection. Every year, Hoa Binh increases its forest cover by 7,300ha, restores more than 12,000ha of forest and actively protects over 60,000ha of natural forest. In some places people do not want trees and even cleared … [Read more...] about Barking up the right tree: Thai Binh teaches the value of reforestation

In this file photo, used for illustrative purpose only, a Vietnamese teacher teaches English at a foreign language center in Ho Chi Minh City. Photo: Dao Ngoc Thach There's a shortage of good jobs for recent graduates in the West. I know; I am one. The only financially viable post-university options included either returning to my parents' house, returning to non-graduate employment or interning for free while sleeping on sofas. In such an unforgiving employment market, the option of teaching English in Vietnam seems like a dream - a chance to live in a novel environment, get paid high wages and, perhaps most importantly, drink cheaper beer. Vietnam’s rocketing economy and optimistic government targets about wanting every child to have some access to a native English teacher by 2020 has resulted in an increasing demand for native English speakers. Such high demand for native speakers has shaped the utopian nature of the living and working conditions being advertised to … [Read more...] about Teaching English in Saigon: At what cost is paradise?
