The programme was jointly held by the Phu Tho General Hospital, the Hanoi Heart Hospital, and the Phu Tho branch of military telecom group Viettel. More than 100 medical personnel from the Phu Tho general hospital participated in the programme. As a result of the screenings, 257 people were diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases, 41 underwent surgery, while 36 others were hospitalised. Speaking to the media in the city yesterday, Dr Do Thi Ngoc Diep said it was one of the most effective ways to combat a disease considered as one of the four "epidemics" of the 21st century. WHO figures showed that 135 million people around the world had diabetes in 1995, but the number had ballooned to 221 million by last year. The number would rise to 300 million by 2025. Screening to help cut infant mortality
HCM CITY — A more comprehensive newborn-screening network in the country would help to further reduce the newborn mortality rate, speakers said at a recent international conference held in HCM City. In Viet Nam, the screening programme has been conducted since 2009, but for only four diseases, congenital hypothyroidism, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and thalassemia. Experts were speaking at the 11th Viet Nam-France-Asia Pacific conference on obstetrics and gynecology organised by the College National des Gynecologues et Obstetriciens Francais and Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital, under sponsorship of FrieslandCampina Viet Nam's Friso brand.
