Vietnam eyes up to $394bn in export revenue in 2023
Vietnam set a target to earn US$393-394 billion in export revenue in 2023, up $22 billion or six percent over last year, said Phan Van Chinh, head of the Agency of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. At a conference on domestic production and consumption promotion and export market expansion held by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on Friday, Chinh said that the target is challenging as the local export sector has been facing many shortcomings, such as high but unsustainable growth and trade deficits with some large markets. Accordingly, Vietnam’s exports to other Asian countries reached USD 177.26 billion in 2022, up 9.5% year-on-year. The country’s imports from other Asian nations hit USD 298.03 billion, up 9.6%. Vietnam saw a trade deficit with only Asia among the five continents. Major trade partners of Vietnam in Asia include China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). According to preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's total import-export value of goods reached USD 730.2 billion last year, up 9.1% compared to 2021. Vietnam remained the third largest seafood supplier to the Republic of Korea (RoK) last year with the country’s seafood market share as part of the RoK’s total imports reaching 10.2%, according to statistics released by the Korea Customs Service. Last year witnessed Vietnam spend US$6.47 billion on importing 1,595 million tonnes of seafood from 109 markets, duly representing a rise of 3.9% in volume and 12.7% in value compared to 2021’s figures. Vietnam remained the third largest seafood supplier to the Republic of Korea last year The RoK mainly increased seafood imports from Russia and Vietnam, while reducing seafood imports from markets such as Norway, the United States, and Peru.
