Bau Truc – Perfect place for tourists to explore quintessence of Cham pottery
Bau Truc is one of the oldest pottery villages in Southeast Asia. Over 90 percent of some 500 families in Bau Truc village are making pottery. For the Cham ethnic minority people, ceramics are not only used as daily utensils, but more importantly, they are an intermedia for them to connect with gods. Local potters believe that their craft was founded more than a thousand years ago by Poklong Chanh, a man who refused to become a mandarin in order to stay at his village teaching housewives how to take clay and shape and fire it into utensils and decorative items. To show their gratitude toward the forefather of their craft, Bau Truc villagers built a temple dedicated to Poklong Chanh and pray for him during Kate, the Cham’s biggest festival held annually in the seventh lunar month. Truong Thi Gach, an 80-year-old potter who has been making ceramics her entire life, said her mother learnt the craft from her grandmother and then passed it down to Gach when she was 10. Gach is now … [Read more...] about Bau Truc – Perfect place for tourists to explore quintessence of Cham pottery
World’s oldest known person dies aged 118: spokesman to AFP
Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away. She died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, spokesman David Tavella said. "There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home, told AFP. The sister was long feted as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 last year left her the longest-lived person on Earth. Guinness World Records officially acknowledged her status in April 2022. Randon was born in the year New York opened its first subway and when the Tour de France had only been staged once. She grew up in a Protestant family as the only girl among three brothers, living in the southern town of Ales. One of her fondest memories was the return of two of her brothers at the end of World War I, she told AFP in an interview on her 116th birthday. "It was … [Read more...] about World’s oldest known person dies aged 118: spokesman to AFP

Trump warns 2024 election ‘our one shot’ to save America
Buffeted by political and legal headwinds, the 76-year-old Republican addressed a few hundred supporters at an intimate rally in South Carolina's capital Columbia after speaking to grassroots activists in Salem, New Hampshire. "The 2024 election is our one shot to save our country and we need a leader who's ready to do that on day one," Trump said from a podium beneath the Statehouse rotunda, flanked by American flags and some of his most loyal political allies. The events were seen as a chance to revitalize a stuttering campaign amid criticism over Trump's failure to make any public appearances since he announced his latest run in November. But there was no discernible shift in his messaging as he launched into his debunked claims of a stolen 2020 election and reprised his litany of disparaging nicknames for his political rivals. He touched on favorite culture war talking points, railing against critical race theory that he said was being taught in the military as well as … [Read more...] about Trump warns 2024 election ‘our one shot’ to save America

For thousands of years, the generations in this hamlet, located at Tri Duc Commune, Phan Hiep Village , have grown up learning the pottery skills of their forefathers. Every day women knead the clay which the men take and mix with water and then mould on a very simple potter’s wheel made of wood. The final products are polished with a layer of clay water. Products are also fired in the traditional Cham way. First they are dried in the sunshine on vacant land next to the hamlet and then the locals collect straw and firewood to put around and into the products to fire them over night.
