Hanoi traditional markets suffer fall in sales
Many of Hanoi’s traditional markets have attracted fewer customers after the Covid-19 pandemic. At around 9 am on March 22, Nga Tu So Market in Dong Da District was quiet, with more traders than customers. A man who works for the market’s parking lot said that over the past few years, just 20-30 motorbikes have been kept there every day compared to the hundreds a decade ago. Hanoi to resume tourism services on West Lake
Hanoi may resume 12 tourism services on the West Lake including boat transportation, after six years of suspension. A floating restaurant on the West Lake has been suspended since 2017 Hanoi People's Committee have just issued a draft regulation on the management of West Lake, which proposed the operation of 12 services including tourist boats, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing, among others on the lake. There will be eight wharfs serving boats on the lake. The committee also planned to organise cultural, entertainment, and sports services on the lake. Hanoi halted the operation of floating restaurants, cruise boats, and all cultural, entertainment, and sports services as well as fish farming on West Lake in early 2017 due to their failure to ensure environmental conditions and fire prevention. Chickenpox outbreak spreads in Hanoi
Hanoi has logged 548 new cases of chickenpox so far this year, with the most recent 70 infections recorded just this week, according to statistics from the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC). There have been no deaths linked to the ongoing outbreak. Chickenpox is on the rise compared to last year, and many of the patients are preschool and elementary school students, which respectively account for 36.5 percent and 38 percent of the total infections. So far, 18 out of Hanoi’s 30 districts have been affected by the outbreak, with Chuong My, Me Linh, Ba Vi, and Nam Tu Liem Districts having each detected over 30 cases. In the outlying district of Chuong My, the local medical center had reported five clusters of 237 chickenpox cases as of March 21. Foreign experts urge Vietnam to relax visa policies, improve tourism services
Martin Koerner, chairman of EuroCham Vietnam's Tourism and Hospitality Sector Committee, told at a tourism conference Wednesday that Vietnam's visa policy remains complicated and restrictive compared to regional neighbors such as Thailand and Singapore. Thailand already extended its tourist visas to a maximum stay of 45 days for over 50 countries while Vietnam currently exempts only citizens of 25 countries from requiring visas with maximum stays of 15 days. EuroCham has proposed the government expand visa exemptions for more countries, including all European countries, the United States, Australia and New Zealand and prolong the duration of visa-free stays to 30 days.
