Việt Nam, Canada red cross societies eye long-term cooperation
HÀ NỘI — The Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) and its Canadian counterpart have agreed to support each other in humanitarian activities and look towards a long-term cooperation agreement in the future. Vice President and Secretary General of the VRCS Nguyễn Hải Anh told visiting President and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) Conrad Sauvé during their talks in Hà Nội on May 21 that he is delighted at the fruitful cooperation between the two countries and the associations. Anh spoke highly of the Canadian government and the CRC for their support to Viet Nam, both material and spiritual, and in international activities. Traveling duo plant hope for ‘greener’ Vietnam
Traveling duo Dang Duc Tuan and Vo Minh Tan planted more than 500 trees during their 110-day journey through all 63 cities and provinces in Vietnam, hoping their seedlings will help a new culture of environmental awareness take root across the country. Downpours submerge multiple locations in northern Vietnam
Heavy downpours submerged multiple places in northern Vietnam on Monday morning, with Vinh Yen City in Vinh Phuc Province suffering the most serious flooding. Rainfall ranging from 70 to 190 millimeters battered many provinces in the region early on Monday morning, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported. In Vinh Yen City, Vinh Phu Province, a torrential rain resulted in severe inundation in various locations. Such major streets as Nguyen Tat Thanh and Me Linh were flooded, leaving traffic paralyzed on many sections. The situation posed countless difficulties for commuters, especially motorcyclists. VN-Index slumps as large-cap stocks face selloffs
Benchmark indices opened the week on a negative note, as many large-cap stocks were weighed on by selling force. On the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE), the VN-Index fell 10.82 points, or 0.87 per cent, to 1,229.89 points. The market's breadth was negative as nearly 260 stocks declined, while 153 stocks increased. Liquidity was also lower than the previous session, of which over VND6.24 trillion (US$269.4 million) worth of shares, equal to more than 259.8 million shares, was traded on the southern bourse. Meanwhile, foreign investors net sold a value of more than VND100 billion on HoSE. The market benchmark extended the last session's losses on a strong profit-taking force, which caused many stocks in the VN30 basket to face a sell-off, of which 24 stocks slid, while only six increased. Downpours trigger traffic jams, property damage in northern Vietnam
Hanoi's Hoang Mai District recorded rain levels at over 130 mm from Monday night, followed by Hai Ba Trung District at 100 mm, and Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Long Bien districts at 80 mm.
