The nation is facing a plethora of huge challenges as it aims to ensure a rapid, smart, and green digital transformation, according to insiders. As outlined during the seventh edition of the e-Conomy SEA report by Google, Temasek, and Bain, the Vietnamese digital economy hit US$23 billion in 2022 and is on track to reach US$49 billion by 2025, making it the fastest in Southeast Asia. Data compiled by the Ministry of Information and Communications indicates that the revenue of the Vietnamese information and communications technology (ICT) industry reached US$148 billion last year, accounting for 14.26% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). As a means of achieving the goal of the digital economy making up 20% of Vietnamese GDP, it can be viewed as essential for the country to maintain an annual digital economic growth of approximately 20%, more than three times higher than the projected GDP growth. Their time to slime: who will be ‘Mollusc of the Year’?
Will you choose beauty? The carnivorous Wavy Bubble Snail, perhaps, with its billowing skirts shimmering under UV light. Or will it be age? Like the venerable 500-year-old Methuselah oyster. Or will you be seduced by the leopard slug with its gymnastic mating ritual? The list of finalists for Mollusc of the Year has something for everyone. In a public vote ending Sunday, five species of soft-bodied invertebrates are vying to follow in the illustrious trail of previous winners, dubbed the "world's most beautiful snail" and "weirdest octopus". The grand prize? The triumphant species will have its genome decoded to better understand its evolution and potential benefits to humanity. The International Mollusc of the Year competition, which kicked off this month, is run by the LOEWE Centre for Translational Biodiversity Genomics, based in Germany. Organisers have whittled down the field from 85,000 mollusc species, thanks to nominations by researchers from around the world. Hazardous rat poison flooding Vietnamese market
Many hazardous types of rodenticides that were prohibited several years ago are now widely sold at pesticide shops, hawker stalls, and grocery stores, posing a threat to residents’ health and lives in Vietnam. In Hanoi, several types of rat poison, without labels or clear origin, are sold everywhere, from hawker stalls to convenience stores. At a grocer's at Thanh Cong B Wet Market, at least three types of rat poison are on sale at a price ranging from VND20,000 (US$0.85) to VND300,000 ($1.27). “Rodenticides mixed with unhusked rice were less effective to kill rats, while rats die immediately eating the poison with red liquid inside,” said the owner of the grocer's. The poisonous drug originates in China, said the owner. “I do not know the ingredients of this type, but the rat poison works well. Rats die right after eating a piece of cake and food mixed with a few droplets of the liquid drug,” stressed the owner. A search for rodenticides with keywords 'Rat poison' on … [Read more...] about Hazardous rat poison flooding Vietnamese market

Vietnamese man brings organic agriculture to his village
A Vietnamese man has chosen to follow the newest agricultural trend which guarantees both profit and quality, with human health always in his mind. While most villagers in Son La Province, located in northwestern Vietnam, still rely heavily on pesticides when growing vegetables and fruits, 30-year-old Vu Xuan Thanh pioneers clean agriculture practices with his organic crops. The Na San region, near Son La’s airport, is where Thanh’s orange garden is located. Customers are often invited to visit, observe, and acquaint themselves with clean agricultural practices that are becoming Thanh’s values to guarantee safety and quality of the goods he sells. Thanh’s garden of one hectare is covered with orange trees with ripe fruits hanging off of the branches that look like orange polka dots on a green background from afar. All these oranges are waiting to be reaped and sold in Hanoi’s organic grocery store chain ahead of Tet, when many kinds of fruit are in high demand. Tet is the … [Read more...] about Vietnamese man brings organic agriculture to his village

Arguably the most vital near-term issue according to those involved is power shortages being felt in some areas of the country. The Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) said that northern industrial zones are being particularly affected, and it wants to see the nation’s Power Development Plan VIII to officially come on board as soon as possible. “In recent years, Japanese corporations have expanded their footprint in Vietnam to capture the great demand for renewable energy. But it is challenging for domestic businesses and financial institutions to independently execute large-scale power … [Read more...] about Business community leads call to action for authorities
