Illustrative image (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Athletics is still the strongest sport of Vietnam, and at the SEA Games, track-and-field stars are hoping to bring home at least 14 gold medals from the Cambodian meet. Vietnam has dominated the past three Games with 17 golds in 2017, 16 in 2019 and 22 at the last Games held a year later than scheduled in 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With just six weeks to go before the start of the Games, the team is training hard to keep its top spot. “We have set a target for each group," said Nguyen Manh Hung, general secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation . "We hope to manage to win at least 14 golds. We can predict the maximum number of golds that we can earn from the Games, but that is our tactic so I cannot reveal that information to anyone." Memories of the Paris Accords: The prisoner exchanges along river banks
When peace was reestablished in Vietnam following the signing of the Paris Accords on January 27, 1973, one of the terms of the accords was prisoner exchanges. The United States and the Republic of Vietnam then formed a list of over 26,700 prisoners to be exchanged with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The sites for the exchange were located in different localities, including Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc provinces. Among them, Quang Tri was one of two major sites for the exchange, the other being Binh Phuoc. Fifty years ago, Luong Chi Hien, now 96, a political instructor at the Quang Tri military headquarters, received orders to become the head of Vietnam’s delegation for the prisoner exchanges. Another 19 people were also in the delegation, along with other units. The chosen site for the exchange was the northern bank of the Thach Han River, located about 0.5 km from National Highway 1. Hien remembers how the area was a field of reeds and weeds back then. … [Read more...] about Memories of the Paris Accords: The prisoner exchanges along river banks
Alexandre Yersin’s house in Vietnam becomes official historical site
The decision was signed by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung on Monday upon a request by the central province of Khanh Hoa's People's Committee. Yersin, born in 1863, was a Swiss-French physician and bacteriologist who made several significant contributions to the international science world, including the co-discovery of Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for bubonic plague. In 1914, Yersin centered his studies on Hon Ba Mountain, which is situated between two communes in Khanh Vinh and Cam Lam Districts. On its peaks, Yersin had a weather station built and performed studies on several plants. He also built a wooden house at the location as a place to stay while performing medicinal experiments. The house was eventually abandoned, and it became dilapidated over time until only the ruins of its foundations remained. In 2004, local Khanh Hoa authorities built a road leading to the top of Hon Ba. The Khanh Hoa Trading and Investment Company then … [Read more...] about Alexandre Yersin’s house in Vietnam becomes official historical site
Vietnam’s online administration procedures still far from a game-changer
Since my license was about to expire, I could either go to one of these places to wait in line or register online. I started with the first method. When I arrived at those offices at the start of the day, they were no longer receiving people and I was told to return early the next morning at 6 a.m. So I turned to online registration, not wanting to waste time. But "online" did not mean quick, or simple. The first step is a medical examination, followed by going to the ward's People's Committee to complete procedures for a digital certificate. Only a health certificate with a certified digital signature is accepted. The ward officer walked me through the steps and emphasized that I needed to create an account on the National Public Service Portal before I could get an e-certified medical certificate. The second step was for me to register for a Portal account using my mobile phone number as the primary means of authentication. My first few attempts were unsuccessful, but then I … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s online administration procedures still far from a game-changer
