Illustrative image (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Athletics is still the strongest sport of Vietnam, and at the SEA Games, track-and-field stars are hoping to bring home at least 14 gold medals from the Cambodian meet. Vietnam has dominated the past three Games with 17 golds in 2017, 16 in 2019 and 22 at the last Games held a year later than scheduled in 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With just six weeks to go before the start of the Games, the team is training hard to keep its top spot. “We have set a target for each group," said Nguyen Manh Hung, general secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation . "We hope to manage to win at least 14 golds. We can predict the maximum number of golds that we can earn from the Games, but that is our tactic so I cannot reveal that information to anyone." Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam beat Botswana athlete Modukanele Lethabo Bokamoso in the Round of 16 of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in India on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. With a height advantage, Tam showed a preemptive strategy. She scored an almost absolute point in each of the first two rounds of Tuesday’s showdown. In the third round, Lethabo Bokamoso appeared to be physically weaker and even kissed the canvas once. In the end, Tam won 5-0, including four rounds with absolute points of 30. Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam trounced Spanish rival Laura Fuertes Fernandez 5-0 in the women’s 50kg quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in India on Wednesday. From the beginning of Wednesday’s match, Tam showed her dominance over Fernandez. Tam did not allow her opponent to approach while launching single and continuous attacks. With abundant physical strength and good stature, Tam confused the European No. 9 and took the lead in the showdown. In the first two rounds, Tam scored with straight punches and accurate hooks into Fernandez’s face, abdomen, and ribs to claim the absolute victory. Tam’s winning marks a milestone in Vietnamese boxing history as she has become the first Vietnamese boxer to enter a world championship final. Notably, Tam’s opponent Wassila in the semifinals won the French National Champion seven times and won two bronze medals in European boxing. Before the victory, Tam also won convincingly the Spanish boxer ranked 9th in Europe Fuertes Fernandez Laura in the quarterfinals and the two-time world champion Nazym Kyzaibay in the knockout stage. In the final, Tam will play Zareen Nikhat of India, who won the championship in the 52 kg category last year. With a ticket to the final, Tam also secured her a ticket to the upcoming Olympic Games, making her the first Vietnamese athlete to the Paris Olympics and also the first Vietnamese boxer to attend two consecutive Olympic Games. K'Duong and A Tieu are two Vietnamese competing in the men's 55kg weight category on Sunday. K'Duong registered 114 kg in the last lift, one kg more than the youth world record that he set at the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship in July 2022. He succeeded and set a new record. A Tieu, 16, ranked second in the snatch event when he lifted 106 kg. In the clean and jerk event, K'Duong continued to dominate when he successfully started with 132 kg. He failed to lift 144 kg on the second turn. But in the last one, he successfully lifted 144 kg, one kg more than the record he set last year. The 17-year-old thus broke a third record for a total weight of 258 kg in the two events. He won three gold medals, while the runner-up Meetei Tomchou of India had a total weight of 234 kg and the Turkey’s Burak Aykun finished third with 227 kg. K'Duong wins gold medals at IWF World Youth Championships. (Photo: IWF) Hanoi (VNA) - K'Duong set up three world records at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships , which is ongoing in Durres, Albania. The Vietnamese broke all three of his own youth world records when he finished 24kg clear of his nearest rival in the men’s 55kg category on March 26. K'Duong, who celebrated his 16th birthday three weeks ago, was the only current world record holder among the men’s entries in Durres. He has made only 11 attempts in his international weightlifting career and he has already set six world records. In the snatch event, he missed his first attempt at 107kg because of a press-out, but successfully managed it the second time to secure the first gold. He then went up 7kg to better his world best by 1kg at the Ramazan Njala Sport Complex . In the clean and jerk, his first attempt of 132kg gave him a sweep of gold.
