The People’s Court in Dong Thap Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta sentenced a woman to death and a man to life in prison for transporting 77 kilograms of narcotics in early 2021. Le Nguyen Thuy Vy, 29, hailing from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, received the death penalty, while Huynh Quoc Dat, 30, a Ho Chi Minh City resident, was handed a life sentence during their trial on Monday. They were both convicted of the illegal transportation of narcotics. In mid-2020, Vy arrived in Ho Chi Minh City and earned a living as a delivery worker, according to the indictment. Vy then met Le Thanh Quan, who had just finished serving his jail term for drug trafficking. The two became close, with Vy considering Quan as her older brother. An additional 769 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed on Tuesday, raising the national tally to over 10.74 million, according to the Ministry of Health. According to Noi Bai International Airport, the number of passengers traveling at the airport set new records.
