ADB lowers growth forecast for Lao economy this year

(Photo: AFP/VNA) Vientiane (VNA) – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revised down its growth forecast for the Lao economy in 2023 to 3.7%, from a 4.0% projection released in April. According to the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) September 2023, economic growth in Laos is forecast to be slower than expected due to weaker growth prospects in China, and macroeconomic pressures arising from unsustainable public debt and a weak Lao currency, the kip. The 2024 growth forecast was kept at 4.0%. Curbing inflation is among the main challenges to Laos. Though inflation decelerated in August to stand at 25.88%, down from 28.64% in June and 27.8% in July, the rate is still among the highest in the region. The Lao Statistics Bureau said the weak kip is one of the main drivers of inflation. "I couldn’t have imagined ever receiving my lost diary from the war around 60 years ago. It was truly surprising and moving. For me, it was an invaluable relic," said Thien, 75. Vietnam’s coffee exports to slow down in Q3

However, the exports will benefit from prices because the world's consumer tastes tend to shift to Robusta coffee. In the 11 months of the 2022 - 2023 crop year from October 2022 to August 2023, Vietnam exported more than 1.6 million tonnes of coffee, a decrease of 2% compared to the same period of the previous crop year. The output in this crop is forecast to be only about 1.5 - 1.6 million tonnes, down 10 - 15% compared to the 2021-2022 crop. There is not much coffee for export now. The supply is expected to improve from November until the new harvest season 2023-2024. 9 tremors strike Vietnam’s Central Highlands district
Kon Plong District in Vietnam’s Central Highlands province of Kon Tum was hit by nine tremors on Friday, with the strongest one measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, according to the Vietnam Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center under the Institute of Geophysics. The ninth tremor, with a magnitude of 3.0, occurred at around 12:47 pm. Previously, the eight other quakes, measuring between 2.6 and 4.4 on the Richter scale, hit the district from 5:00 am to 10:30 am, with the 4.4-magnitude one recorded at 7:45 am. Residents in neighboring areas such as Kon Ray District and Kon Tum City in Kon Tum Province and Chu Pah District in Gia Lai Province also felt the tremors.
