The Black Virgin Mountain – a spiritual destination for Buddhist in Spring 2021

The Hanoitimes - The 300-year-old pagoda and the Buddha statute atop the highest mountain in the Southeast is a favorite spiritual destination of locals and Buddhists in the spring. Situated at 986 meters above sea level, Nui Ba Den or Black Virgin Mountain is considered as the rooftop of Vietnam southern area. The mountain, covered by white clouds all year round, is an indispensable spiritual destination for Tay Ninh people and Buddhists in the regions every Tet Holiday and Spring. In early days of Spring, the whole scenery of the sacred Black Lady mountain is magically beautiful with thousands of colorful blooming flowers underneath the thin layer of mist. This Tet holiday of the buffalo is also a special Tet for locals as a wonderful giant statute of Buddha is inaugurated, adding a new spiritual monument to the site. With a total height of 72 meter, cast with more than 170 tons of bronze, the Buddha statute has been recognized as “Asia’s highest copper structure located on a mountain’s peak” and “The tallest bronze Buddha statue in Vietnam located on a mountain’s peak” by the World Guinness Records. Standing on the mountain top amid the white clouds, Buddha Lady directs her compassionate eyes towards the fertile Tay Ninh plain giving blessings and peace to the people and the nation. Along with Chua Ba (Lady Pagoda), Black Virgin Mountain is a famous sacred destination throughout the Southern region. Before Covid-19 pandemic, there used to be lots of local and international tourists and Buddhists flocked here on the occasion of Lunar New Year, praying for peace and good fortune. Not only attracting tourists by its meaningful spiritual journey, today's Black Virgin Mountain also becomes splendid tourism destination with beautiful scenery of lush green trees and all-year-round blooming flowers. Move over White Christmas, welcome White Tet in Sa Pa

It began snowing at around 8 a.m. Monday. At the peak, temperatures dipped to minus 1 to 3 degrees Celcius. The cold temperatures combined with 91 percent humidity to create this rare occurrence in sub-tropical northern Vietnam. Since October 2020, Fansipan peak in Sa Pa Town of Lao Cai Province has experienced three frost periods, but this was the first time it snowed here this winter. Around a month earlier, there was some snowfall in other areas of the northernmost region in Vietnam, like the O Quy Ho peak in Lai Chau Province and Y Ty Commune in Lao Cai Province. Tourists flocked to Fansipan’s "Heaven’s Gate" to enjoy the snow. The stair of a pagoda is a smooth white blanket with a thickness of 30 centimeters. A stone dragon lining a set of stairs peers out from a snowy blanket. The snow scenes on the mountain peak have captivated locals and visitors, especially near the recently built padoga complex. The 32.8-meter Dai Hong Chung watchtower rises from an ocean of white. The largest bronze Buddha statue in Vietnam, 21.5 m tall at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, presents a mysterious, spiritual picture. Hoang Tung (left) of Hanoi said: "It is not easy to move around because thick snow has covered the steps. Visitors should move very carefully to avoid accidents," he said. …

Snow, ice fully cover on top of Fansipan mountain

According to the General Department of Disaster Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development,  the Standing office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, temperature on the top of Fansipan plunged to minus 3 degrees Celsius triggering snowfall and ice blanket on tree branches and grasses. Snow thickness in the whole area reached at 60 centimeters creating beautiful scenery like the winter landscape in Europe. From the morning of February 8, snow suddenly began falling at the top of Fansipan. Only two hours later, snow was formed in the whole area. From last night to this morning, the northeast monsoon has been spreading to the Northern region causing rains along with chilling winds on the large scale due to an impact of an increasingly cold spell. The National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting had issued a warning of unseasonal floods in the Northern mountainous regions. In addition, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control also sent an official letter to request to localities to actively respond to the risk of storms, hail and the ongoing cold air mass.
