Vietnam's achievements in improving children's lives have come in for praise from a UNICEF official who hailed the country Wednesday for setting an example in fulfillment of children's rights. Vietnam's renewal process is becoming known around the world as one of the most successful examples of economic transformation in recent history, said UNDP Resident Representative Jordan Ryan. At the first high level roundtable meeting on the 20-year review of renewal in Hanoi on Wednesday, Ryan added that almost every aspect of economic life in Vietnam has been touched in some way by the renewal. Gifted-student strategy needed
The Ministry of Education and Training should create a new development policy to diversify subjects at high schools for the gifted, according to the Strategy and Education Programme Institute. An institute survey showed that these specialised schools were the best way to identify and develop talent by creating an environment for students to grow. Nguyen Anh Dung, an institute representative, says the ministry should allow diverse teaching models and address special needs, which would include allowing students to skip grades. Nearly 48,000 students attend 58 high schools for the gifted with more than 20 subjects offered. The schools have been a domestic and international success. From 2002 to 2007, students of the College of Sciences’ high school won 42 international and 247 national prizes. Local electronics manufacturers switch focus
Local electronics manufacturers are switching from household products to specialized industrial ones to adapt to the changing competition landscape. Le Ngoc Son, chairman of the Vietnam Electronics Enterprise Association, said that after many firms assembling TV sets and other audio-visual equipment had to shut down business due to the tougher competition heralded by Vietnam's accession into the WTO, many are restructuring production for survival. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a trade exchange between Vietnamese and South Korean electronic companies held in HCMC last week, Son said a number of industry players had shifted to producing specialized electronic equipment for the medical and other industrial sectors. Son cited his business, the Vietnam Electronic and Information Technology Corporation where he serves as chairman, as an example.
