Surge of Thai visitors lifts Da Nang hopes for tourism market diversity

· August 19, 2019 ·

With 60 weekly flights connecting Vietnam’s third largest city with major Thai destinations, the number of Thai arrivals to Da Nang quadrupled year-on-year in the first seven months of this year to almost 107,000. Thais accounted for 6 percent of Da Nang's total foreign arrivals, becoming the third largest group after South Koreans (1 million, making up 57 percent) and Chinese (500,000 or 26 percent), according to the city’s tourism department. Domestic and foreign carriers, betting on this trend, have been racing to launch more flights. Vietnamese budget carrier Vietjet Air last year launched flights from Da Nang to Bangkok. In April Malaysian-owned budget airline Thai AirAsia began a daily service from Chiang Mai to Da Nang. Da Nang is a major economy-tourism hub that attracts many foreign visitors, including Thai tourists, all year round, Santisuk Khlongchaiya, head of Thai AirAsia’s commercial operations, said. From Da Nang, tourists can easily travel to … [Read more...] about Surge of Thai visitors lifts Da Nang hopes for tourism market diversity

Bong Mieu exit causes golden headache for local authorities

· December 12, 2019 ·

The current standing of laws on environmental protection and minerals in Vietnam are being called into question after the collapse of Bong Mieu gold mine, with locals paying the price for the damage left behind. Insufficient restoration cover for such activities, along with the lack of responsibility placed on organisations to implement mining schemes in a proper manner, mean that lessons must be learned in order to efficiently procure high-quality foreign direct investment in the mining sector. After Bong Mieu Gold Mining Co., Ltd. in the south-central province of Quang Nam saw its mining licence for Bong Mieu mine expire three years ago, one of the two largest gold mines in Southeast Asia went officially bankrupt in 2018. The consequences, however, are far from over as the surrounding area has been ploughed and left to deal with dangerous chemicals. This has led to the province being forced to utilise its local budget to close the mine entirely and take up all works of environmental … [Read more...] about Bong Mieu exit causes golden headache for local authorities
