While the Foreign Ministry asked for Thailand and Cambodia’s assistance to search for ten missing fishermen in the southern province of Ca Mau, the ship owner, Ho Van Tuan, received phone calls from an unknown woman asking for ransom. On January 10, Colonel Pham Van Phong, chief commander of border guard forces of Ca Mau province, verified the information that a woman who called herself an official of Thai agencies called the owner of CM99219 ship, which has ten missing sailors, asking for ransom. Doubting that this is swindling, Phong instructed the local border guard forces to warn the ship owners and the families of missing fishermen of the possible trick and told them to not send money to Thailand. Phong said that rescue is a humanitarian task so it is impossible that an official of Thailand called to ask for ransom, especially when Vietnamese fishermen did not enter Thailand’s territorial waters. “When Thai diplomatic agencies officially inform us about … [Read more...] about Unknown woman asks ransom for missing fishermen

Fishermen sue ConocoPhillips over China spill
A group of Chinese fishermen is suing US oil giant ConocoPhillips for 490 million yuan (US$77 million) in damages allegedly caused by an oil spill, state media said Wednesday. The early-June leak released more than 3,000 barrels of oil and oil-based mud - used as a lubricant in drilling - off China's northeastern coast, drawing widespread public criticism and warnings from Chinese authorities. AFP calls to the court were not answered and a spokeswoman for ConocoPhillips said the company was not aware of the legal action. Environmental groups and local fishermen have accused the US firm and its Chinese state-run partner CNOOC of initially covering up the spill, saying it was discovered in June but only made public nearly a month later. Both firms deny the … [Read more...] about Fishermen sue ConocoPhillips over China spill
