President reduces death penalties to life sentences for 21 prisoners
President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on August 12 decided to reduce death penalties to life sentences for 21 prisoners, including two foreigners. The decision was made in line with the 2013 Constitution and following proposals by the Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court, Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy and Chairman of the Presidential Office. Progress in research, clinical trials of domestic COVID-19 vaccines updated
There are five vaccines being in the research and clinical trial process, namely Nanocovax, COVIVAC, ARCT-154, COVID-19 HIPRA and S-268019, the ministry said, adding the research is being conducted on schedule and in line with contents of the research plans approved by the ministry. The work is expected to complete in December next year. As of August 11, Vietnam received 253,071,094 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, including 234,636,494 for the people aged 12 and above, and 18,434,600 for children aged between 5-11. So far, as many as 249,778,892 doses have been administered to people nationwide, with 100% of people aged over 18 years old; and from 12 to under 18 getting the first and second injections. The vaccination rate of 3rd and 4th shots in the over-18-year-old group reached 73.9% and 57.4%, respectively. In July, as many as 13.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered to people nationwide, up 2.1 million compared to June, the ministry said. Border guards overcome flooding to save locals
In particular, from August 6-10, heavy and prolonged rain in the upper of Ea Sup Thuong lake together with the overflowing of reservoirs inundated low-lying areas in Ea Sup district, Dak Lak province. The floodwater was constantly rising, separating many traffic routes. Route 14C was flooded at the section of Ea H'leo bridge; the inter-commune road from Ia Lop commune to Ea Roc commune was submerged at the spring bridge No.12 section; flooding occurred in village 13 which lies between Ira Rve and Ea Roc communes. These caused traffic jams and difficult travel. According to initial statistics, in Ia Lop commune, 92 houses were flooded; more than 430 hectares of crops, farm produce and more than 1,100 cattle and poultry were destroyed by floodwater. Therefore, the upcoming revised law should raise the family deduction for taxpayers from the current VND 11 mln per month to a higher level, to even VND 18 mln or VND 20 mln per month due to escalating costs of commodities. Now the current level of VND 11 mln per month has become irrelevant. Along with this, the family deduction for dependents which is currently VND 4.4 mln per month, should also be raised to 50% to 70%, or about VND 6 mln or VND 7.5 mln per month.
