The Vietnamese swimming team beat 2016 Olympic champion Joseph Schooling of Singapore and his teammates to win a gold medal in the men’s freestyle 4x200m relay event at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Tuesday. The team, including Nguyen Huu Kim Son, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Hoang Quy Phuoc, and Tran Hung Nguyen, competed against their rivals from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia in the event. Their performance, seven minutes and 16.31 seconds, outshone that of Singaporean star swimmer Joseph Schooling, who had triumphed in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and his teammates, earning Vietnam the gold medal. It also set a new record in the category as the former highest achievement was seven minutes and 17.88 seconds. Oanh defended her title in the women’s 1,500m event after finishing with a time of 4min 14.98sec. Her teammate Khuất Phương Anh came second in 4:26.90, and Singapore representative Goh Chui Ling was third in 4:33.41. It was Oanh’s third time winning this event at the SEA Games. Sơn beat 11 rivals to triumph in the men’s standard chess category with seven points after nine matches. In the last game, Sơn defeated Lye Lik Zang of Malaysia after 39 moves. Before entering the ninth game, Sơn was leading the category though several opponents were tied with him on six points. The Vietnamese player clearly showed his determination to take the first gold medal for Vietnamese chess. He played firmly and took advantage of Zang's mistakes. With 9.71 points, Giang brought home the gold medal in the women’s Changquan category. Her teammate, Duong Thuy Vi also bagged a bronze medal in the event. In the women's taijijian event, Tran Thi Minh Huyen secured a silver and Tran Thi Kieu Trang pocketed a bronze for Vietnam. The gold medal came to Wong Agatha Chrystenz of the Philippines.
