The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction proposed on Tuesday an allocation of VND500 billion (US$21.37 million) from the municipal budget for the renovation of 246 old, run-down apartment buildings in the southern metropolis. The proposal was made during a meeting reviewing the implementation of the Housing Law in the city in the 2016-21 period. The construction department’s deputy director Huynh Thanh Khiet reported that the agency has just completed the inspection, review, classification, and quality control process at 474 old apartment buildings constructed before 1975. The department relocated 982 households living at 19 of those apartment buildings and dismantled ten others with a total floor area of 123,211.4 square meters. Buddhist monks, nuns in Hanoi donate money to build houses for the poor
Addressing the ceremony, Chairwoman of the Hanoi VFF Committee Nguyen Lan Huong asked the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Hanoi to spread the compassionate spirit of Buddhism among the community and accompany the VFF chapters at all levels in performing social welfare work towards fulfilling the goal of sustainable poverty reduction of the city in 2022 and following years. A Pakistan zoo has called off plans to auction 12 lions from its ever-growing pride to private buyers, saying it would instead create new enclosures for the big cats. Lahore Safari Zoo cancelled an auction of lions from its growing pride and said it would expand current facilities instead. The auction planned for Thursday had drawn condemnation from the WWF, which urged authorities at Lahore Safari Zoo to instead rehome them with other government wildlife facilities. "The main reason behind the auction was the lack of space," deputy director Tanvir Ahmed Janjua told AFP, adding officials had decided to speed up work building two new enclosures. Tropical storm Mulan to hit northern Vietnam tomorrow
The storm is forecast to cause heavy downpours and rough seas in the northern region, including Hanoi, in the coming days. A tropical low depression has strengthened into a tropical storm named Mulan, which will hit the northern coast of Vietnam early on August 11 morning, according to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting (NCHMF). Mulan is the second tropical storm to have formed in the East Sea this year and will enter Vietnamese waters shortly, the center said, adding that its center was 480 kilometers from Mong Cai in the northern province of Quang Ninh this morning with winds of up to 62-88 kilometers per hour (kph). The group will stage a total of 20 shows, with each lasting for 50 minutes across the cities of Seoul, Gyungju, Yungduk, and Chuncheon from August 10 to September 6, reported Radio The Voice of Vietnam (VOV). The total area of forest meeting standards for calculating forest cover was 13,923,108ha, resulting in a percentage of forest cover of 42.02%. In the decision, the ministry assigned the Administration of Forestry to establish a national forest resources database. The Ministry required localities that recorded a reduction in natural forest area in 2021 to investigate the causes of the reduction and undertake measures to restore the forests, as well as to identify and punish those who are responsible for the reduction in forest area. In 2020, the country had 10,279,185ha of natural forest and 4,398,030ha of planted forest. Soc Trang invests efforts in poverty reduction among ethnic minority groups

(Photo: VNA) Soc Trang (VNA) – Soc Trang province, home to the largest population of ethnic minority people in the Mekong Delta, has been working hard over the past years to reduce poverty in the communities. The local household poverty rate, measured by using multidimensional criteria, has been brought down to 6.64% from 36.7% in 1992, when Soc Trang was re-established. The rate in ethnic minority communities stands at 2.85% at present, down 3 - 4% annually. All the communes with many ethnic minorities have secondary schools, healthcare stations, and concrete roads reaching their centres. Besides, 100% of communes, wards, and towns in the province have gained access to the national power grid and met the national healthcare criteria.
