International volunteers from Habitat for Humanity have joined the “Vietnam Big Build 2016” project to build houses for 20 poor families in Tam Nong district, northern Phu Tho province. The project drew the participation of more than 200 volunteers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, United States, New Zealand and Vietnam. International volunteers build houses for the poor in Phu Tho (Photo: habitatvietnam.org) On the occasion, Habitat for Humanity also supports 45 million VND (2,000 USD) for families of the project. Habitat for Humanity is a non-government organisation which has operated in Vietnam for 15 years. The organisation supported more than 13,600 low-income households nationwide. Chip giant Synopsys to help Vietnam develop semiconductor industry
The signing took place on Sept. 18 (U.S. time) at the headquarters of Synopsys in San Francisco, California, under the witness of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his working trip. The memorandum states that Synopsys will support the Department of Information Technology and Communications Industry in creating a plan to establish a semiconductor research center. Synopsys’ technology is set to be used as samples and prototypes for semiconductor production. Nguyen Thien Nghia, deputy head of the department, said that the partnership with Synopsys allows Vietnamese engineers to be trained by one of the best chip designers in the world. E.C. Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginijus Sinkevičius made the remarks at a meeting with Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan in Brussels on September 18. Ho Chi Minh City establishes country’s first food safety department
The council passed a resolution on the matter during its 11th meeting, which opened on September 19. The department will operate under the management of the municipal People’s Committee and follow professional directions and instructions from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The establishment of the department is an upgrade of the six-year pilot operation of the municipal Food Safety Management Board. The move is also in line with the National Assembly’s Resolution 98/2023/QH 15 on special mechanisms and policies for the city’s development. With a population of over 10 million people, the demand for food in Ho Chi Minh City is huge, making it a hub for the circulation of a large volume of locally-produced and imported food products, hence the need for the Department of Food Safety.
